TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

How would you use the Gear Command feature on a street truck? Have to say I've always been able to keep a TH350 in second as long as I needed to, but must admit the speeds were probably under 60 mph.

    I'm at a loss..

Does the old drum get the hottest no matter which side it's on? If already asked and answered, well that's what happens with long threads and lots of guys simply trying to help.

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

I'm not familiar with gear command. I'll have to look it up. Just don't go overboard on line pressure, or you will have some brutal shifts that can't be good for the drivetrain.

    I'm at a loss..

I would not assume this is a combination valve problem. And I would certainly would not buy an aftermarket brass valve (like the common PV2) that is prone to leaking. (Edit: Wilwood makes good stuff, so they would probably be the exception.) I haven't read all the posts here, so I don't know...

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

Which brand? I highly recommend TransGo's 350-1&2 Reprogramming Kit. I've installed at least three of them over the years, as far back as the late 70s! So, they've been around a while and their tech support is great. The main difference between Stage 1 & 2 is the pressure regulator spring...

TH350 5 neutrals (delayed shifting/won't go into gear)

Man, I've never seen a valve body gasket that looked like that. I guess it could be your problem. I'd suggest removing and checking the valves and springs on the side of the valve body to make sure they move freely. Even then, I have to wonder about junk in the valve body and the fluid...

    I'm at a loss..

I chased a similar problem with the rear brakes on my 82 C10. No drag at all when cold, but one side would hardly rotate when hot. Using an IR temp gun, I recall one side being 100+ degrees hotter than the other. I swapped the drums from side to side and the problem followed the suspect drum...

Battery Wiring - New to This

That extra pigtail is common on generic positive battery cables. It was used in earlier vehicles, such as 67-72 trucks. In that case it was connected through a fusible link to something known as a "splice" that joined it to the alternator output wire and fuse panel feed wire. On later model...

Jegs Wiring harness versus Painless Wiring Harness

Doesn't sound too bad to me for a shop with lots of overhead and employees to pay. If I were still doing projects out of my home garage, I'd probably charge 40 hours at $45/hr. I've done three Chevy trucks (66, 69, 82) and two cars (37 Chev hot rod & 55 Chev) and I'd say the square body was...

Jegs Wiring harness versus Painless Wiring Harness

I doubt you'll find a wiring harness support specialist at Jeg's, whereas that's all they do at Painless. And check out the awesome Painless documentation. I actually referred to their 100+ page square body kit document when installing a generic kit in an 82 C10. If you're going to re-wire...

Factory Rubber Cab Mounts or Polyurethane?

The ProThane poly cab mount bushings under my 69 C10 still look like new after 28 years. Some say they make the ride harsher than rubber mounts. However, for those who can feel the difference in an old pickup, you have a more sensitive butt than me! A 60s-70s Cadillac maybe, but not a truck...

Who is or has run a 307?

My 69 C10 had a stock 307 with a TH350 when I bought it used 35 years ago. It was really a slug. Felt like there was an anchor dragging at highway speeds. First thing I did was add dual exhausts and generic turbo mufflers. They were only 2" pipes, but helped significantly compared to the...

    Ls swap or not?

That's a combo you will probably never see at any car show. And if it's running fine, keep that engine! I know nothing about diesels, but there must be some tips and tricks that can help it make a little more power. My only experience with LS engines is rebuilding a 99 LS1 to LS6 specs, but I...

How to increase your odds for success at automotive wiring, electrical installation and trouble shooting.

How about small gauge wires that have been bent and tugged on many times over 40-50 years? I found one where the wire strands were broken, but the insulation was OK. It was a coolant temp sender wire that was hanging on by a strand or two. No wonder resistance was high and the gauge read low...

    1982 custom deluxe 250ci

From a post I made just a few minutes ago about my 82 C10 with a 250 six: BTW, my conversion from six with manual trans to V-8 with auto trans was not trivial. Had to research and find lots of parts, such as any bracket you can name, along with a new radiator, fan, shroud, pulleys, belts, PS...

My beige 1982 C10 custom deluxe

Pretty cool! My 82 was similar - a base model with a 250 six and no power anything except steering. Ended up with a 350/TH350. I had it for 8 years, but sold it to make room for a 69. BTW, my conversion from six with manual trans to V-8 with auto trans was not trivial. Had to research and...

    Electrical genius advice needed,....

I don't know about a 78, but an 82 has two 12 volt feed wires running through the bulkhead connector to the fuse panel. They are two large diameter red wires. (My 82 used metric wires that were somewhere between 10 and 12 gauge.) Anyway, make sure you have 12 volts on those wires.

Transmission is causing engine to stall

Could it be a vacuum leak? What is the manifold vacuum at idle in Park, and in gear? I've seen a tight stock converter cause this when a way too big cam is added, but sounds like your engine is pretty much stock. And, wow, a bent pushrod is something that I've never heard of.

    I got a 87 R10 and I just can't leave it alone

Have to ask why you want to lower the truck and hurt low-to-mid RPM power if you plan to drive it around your property and haul stuff??? Cams are just one part of a total package. Adding only a performance cam to a stock engine will reduce cylinder pressure, manifold vacuum, and torque.

    Long tube headers/dual exhaust question

I've installed an H-pipe on one vehicle, and an X-pipe on another. Have to say I didn't notice much difference in sound or seat-of-the-pants performance. But it stands to reason that back pressure will be somewhat reduced with two paths for an exhaust pulse to follow. I didn't watch the...

    New Air Compressor

My compressed air needs are much less than most of you guys. I bought a 40 gallon 3 hp Puma last year from a local compressor supply store that's been in business since the 1980s. It's a high quality, USA-built compressor, and I got to deal face-to-face with a guy who really knows his stuff...

    Headlights go on and off

Yes, the light switch's internal protection may be tripping/resetting, depending on how much current your lights are drawing. Standard sealed beam headlight wattage is 60/55 watts. H4-type halogen bulbs can be 60/55, 100/80, or even 130/90. The second two can even melt wire insulation and...

Haynes manual suggest silicone dielectric grease for ignition module?

I used thermal thermal paste when I worked as an electronic technician in the 1970s. A common use on a variety of electronic equipment was for mounting a power transistor to a heat sink. Something like this:
