    Power Steering Gear Leak

Do it now. Mine started leaking badly with no warning or previous leakage at all. Put a new seal in years ago, box is still great. It is just a lip seal on mine.

    79 250 2nd temp sensor

Metal temperature switches are primarily (maybe only) an inline engine thing with GM. All they do is close when the designed temp is reached or exceeded. This will either turn on the idiot light or peg the gauge at HOT. Our '86 Cavalier 4 cylinder used one of the 1/8 thread metal temp switches...

Link Belt vs. (Double) Roller Timing Chains

You can turn the crank back and forth and listen to the slop / clank of the chain, since there is no tensioner. May give you a SWAG of how sloppy it really is. I have anecdotally noticed chains seem to be the noisiest on cool (but above freezing), damp mornings before the engine comes up to...

Link Belt vs. (Double) Roller Timing Chains

I did a Japanese made double roller from NAPA at 200k in my LG4. The 2 piece standard (also from NAPA) was so sloppy after 100k (it replaced the nylon wonder and sloppy original chain at 100k) I didn't want a planned job at 300k.

New to me 1988 Cutlass Ciera xc

That's too bad. Wouldn't surprise me if the digital dash car has the voice module that talks through the left front speaker too.

New to me 1988 Cutlass Ciera xc

The 3.8 Buick (not to be confused with the 3800 when redesigned, 1989) used a nylon coated, pot metal, camshaft timing gear, which was a disaster in a 90 degree V6. Pull the camshaft position sensor and see if it has failed. Cool car though. I have two Buick Century's.

    Does a AM/FM Delco Radio with cassette fit in a 73 C20?

I have an AM/FM Cassette from an '84 Caprice in my '78 C20, if that is any help. Perfect fit, but the back brace was missing.

    New here

My family's business started dealing with Deutz products in the early 70s and found them to be excellent. The noise of an air cooled diesel is noticeable compared to a water cooled.

Welcome! Awesome engine but they are noisy, to put it mildly.

    1981 El Camino parts runner

While the various SS models are associated with high performance, many were not necessarily such. Many first gen Novas were 6 cylinders. The Impala SS could be bought with any engine, including the base 6 cylinder from '62 to '67 (maybe even '68). There were about 400 Impala SS 6 cylinders built...

    1981 El Camino parts runner

Sadly, the original top option then is the LG4. There is that awful, 267 V8 (de-bored 305) that can be in B & Gs of that era too.

My 3rd Car, a FREE 1990 Olds Cutlass Supreme

Looks like you need brackets, but I'm pretty ignorant of the 'W' car rear suspension. I believe the rear strut design was unique to them.

Question for you out there that have run a 292 in a truck

Incidentally, some of the older Ford I6s (not the 300) and the Chrysler Slant 6 only had 4 main bearings. The Chevy 6 (194-292) shares a lot of design (and some actual parts) with the small block, so it is plenty stout.

Question for you out there that have run a 292 in a truck

A 'lump port' kit and cutting the bosses out of the intake ports of the head of the 194-292 I6 are supposed to do wonders for the flow characteristics, which are fairly poor in stock form. I just want efficiency and to get away from the hot soak issues with the original design with modern fuel.

Question for you out there that have run a 292 in a truck

They definitely like fuel. The original GM 1 barrel leaves a lot to be desired. I have a throttle body fuel injection fuel injection nearly completed for mine, to go on an Offenhauser intake. I kind of lost interest with everything I have going on. With so much old stuff around here, I commonly...

    Best r4 compressor brand?

I would love to do the V5 myself in place of the R4, but IIRC, the suction and discharge ports are reversed from the R4. GM says the V5 oil drain plug is only supposed to be 'x' degrees from the 6 o'clock position (bottom), when mounted. I have no idea what would happen long term if inverted.

My 3rd Car, a FREE 1990 Olds Cutlass Supreme

They are called 'belly leakers' on V5s. This wasn't as much of an issue when they were painted, but became a big issue when left bare and the aluminum corrodes. The can be resealed, but I'm not sure that I would, and it would need a new double lip shaft seal while you are there. Unlike the...

My 3rd Car, a FREE 1990 Olds Cutlass Supreme

Sounds like a plan. You can put the entire amount of oil required right in the crankcase of the V5 compressor with a clean system. I would use PAG in this case. The only concern is the original accumulator. This has the old XH5 desiccant, which is not forward compatible with newer refrigerants...

"I purchased a GM Performance TBI 350 all stock" Are these roller or flat tappet? I hate to say it, but it almost sounds like a cam going flat.

    Engine Boom Progress

As I've thought about it more, I never would have guessed that an '86 454 in a one ton would have contained the nylon and pot metal wonder. I really thought they were light duty / light duty emissions only.

    Engine Boom Progress

The old nylon coated, pot metal wonder. The shards of nylon jamming in the oil pump and ending up in the galleys, etc., would concern me more than the aluminum. The nylon has destroyed many-a-domestic V8 (and some Buick V6s) after the timing set was replaced after the cam gear failure, if the...

    Charging a new A/C system

You may very well be right. I know that dispensing refrigerant will give you an abnormally high, low side pressure. If you close the tap, you will see an immediate drop. Yours sounds too high though. They do act strangely with low refrigerant levels, but I am highly suspicious of a variable...

    Charging a new A/C system

No more oil, but I did wonder if it possibly just needed more time to allow the refrigerant to enter. Not positive from your description that there was a problem yet (except for the low port issue, Jesse covered that). However, the variable orifice tubes don't have a good reputation.
