    IF it is backfiring it IS getting spark, the distributor could be out a tooth or more or it could be 180 out. Did you take the timing chain off?

    Have you checked to make sure your ignition system is getting its proper 12v? Maybe it only has enough juice to keep it running good enough but keeps fouling the plugs?
