    I had one break on my 87 suburban but luckily i was only about five miles from home so i walked back and got my other truck and got a new one and fixed it. I`ve had my 85 K20 since 1994 and i can`t remember replacing that one.

    The same one on my 85 rusted into two seperate pieces years ago and i never fixed it. I have a class iv hitch on there that i think more than compensates for the loss of the crossmember so i never bothered to fix it.

    Exactly, you need it as clean as possible for the best adhesion of the new liner. A wire brush is the easiest and quickest way and harmless if you go easy with it.
