I've owned a couple vortec 350 in a 98 Yukon and a 00 2500, yukon got 3-4 mpg less than a 99 Tahoe 5.3 I owned. I managed a fleet of trucks at work around vortec 350 to early ls trucks timeframe and same result, 5.3 always got better mileage. Just my real world experience. But again, you don't...- Mogulmasher

Curious from people that have run these newer efi systems like Holley Sniper on a sbc, how much better does mpg get? My guess is not much. I bet a carbed 5.3 still gets better mpg than a Sniper equipped sbc. I mean ls is so much more efficient and is a full roller motor.... I think rear-end...- Mogulmasher

Love the idea of an 8.1. I currently have a '06 2500hd cc with 8.1 and 6 speed Allison (only year that got 6 speed auto for 8.1). I tow camper and sleds with it and love it. It's just such a strong running motor. Does drink a little oil after extended periods of foot to the floor pulling NH...- Mogulmasher

I was just coming on to say what the last 2 have said. Check your timing, too much advance can be hard starting when engine is hot.- Mogulmasher

1983 454 vs 5.3 LS for towing
I'd stick with 454. Day to day empty with a 5.3 would be better but wouldn't tow as well. If ya gotta scratch the ls itch a 6.0 would be a better choice for towing. I've had gmt800 trucks with 5.3, 6.0 and currently an 8.1. The 6.0 does way better than a 5.3 but my current 8.1 outdoes them all...- Mogulmasher

Do I rebuild my SBC or swap for an LS3?
My real world mpg with ls motors hasn't been great, although everything I've had has been awd/4wd. My 6.0 in 1500hd/2500/2500hd trucks have got 10-12, my Yukon xl Denali with 6.0 was either side of 12, and current escalade with 6.2 is 12.5-13.5. Heck my current 2500hd with 8.1 and 6 speed...- Mogulmasher

Well this is an interesting thread, I'll be in same position next year. I just picked up a 77 c15 with a low mile crate 350 in it. My plan was to get it all running and on the road as is and then build the 5.3 I have sitting in corner of shop to swap in later. But maybe it isn't worth it. I plan...- Mogulmasher

New member here from southeast NH. New to the forum and have a new project, but not new to squarebodys. My first vehicle at 16 was a Hawaiian blue '79 K10 that dad and I restored.
