Lock up converter - not feeling the love

I'll explore the idea of an adjustable switch. How can I have it only engage in overdrive?

Right rear locking up long before other brakes applied..

So bad front pads were the culprit? Interesting.

Were Wooden Beds Painted at Factory?

I have to claim poor memory in this case. I don't recall that the wood was painted. The strips, of course, were. Then again, I don't recall what I had for lunch yesterday.

Were Wooden Beds Painted at Factory?

Digging up and old thread here to add my .02. I'm the original owner of a 1980 C10 stepside. The wooden bed was NOT painted when I picked it up at the dealer.

Lock up converter - not feeling the love

The ride: 1980 C10, mild roller 400, 200-4R, 2-2200 converter, 3.73 gears, 27.5" tires. Nothing fancy or unusual. I thought when I had the trans built that it would be nice for fuel economy to use a lock up. It's wired through the brake switch, then to a toggle switch, then to the vacuum...

    Big brakes and wheel clearance

Thanks. A picture is worth a thousand words. I should have been more specific. I'm worried about 13" disk brakes.

    Big brakes and wheel clearance

I'm considering new wheels for my 1980 C10 stepside. I'd like to keep the option of 13" brakes open. Is it safe to buy 17" wheels? McGaughey won't claim to fit but CPP says their's will fit most 17" wheels. What experiences can anyone share? What about other options? 18" wheels just...

    700R4 selection

Morgan, how does that set up feel when it goes into overdrive? About what MPH does it go into overdrive?

    700R4 selection

Ya, the converter is the next piece to the puzzle. I've never built an auto but I did have a car with a pretty high stall in it. It was kinda fun to drive but not what I want now. 18-2000 is the max. I'd rather go with a 1650. Sure wish I could try each out to see how I like them.

    700R4 selection

The bigger of the two cams that were recommended is probably about as much duration as I would have gone anyway. The 112 lobe separation is what sort of surprised me. Howard's Cams 110041-12 Advertised duration - 279/289 Duration @ 0.050 - 225/235 Lobe separation - 112 Intake...

    700R4 selection

Today's update. I'm at the cam selection phase now. I called Howard's to get a recommendation. I had not really considered the overall top gear ratio. They pointed out that my combination of 3.73 gears and 26-28" tires wouldn't really work with an aggressive cam. If the trans goes into...

    700R4 selection

I just ordered heads from Promaxx so that's settled. Next is cam selection. I'm leaning toward a 1800-2000 stall for the converter. I really don't want to go crazy with this. Once I choose a cam, I'll get to the details on the trans.

    deck height / quench

This is a build on a budget. I'm not looking for all out HP. Just a nice hot rod motor. So.... Friday I ordered a set of Promaxx heads as I had none at all. Got them direct with steam holes drilled for $825 shipped. I'll make sure the cam is good for the combo. Don't want to build too...

    deck height / quench

I remeasured tonight with a helper and got more consistent readings right around .042. Not great but the variance is .0022. I can tune around that I suppose. The Summit calculator puts it at 9.74:1. I'm starting to think a bit more conservative with the cam.

    700R4 selection

Gotta have the overdrive. I want it to be interstate friendly. I traded a few emails with Monster. They are certainly nice to deal with so far.
