@Raider L ,....boy when you're right you're right, Raider.....
@1984k20,

No, you are all wrong. It's the license plate light hole, for the light fixture. There should be one on each side. Some did have just one and the other hole did sometimes have the trailer plug. But it's the license plate light. Get one and put it in there.

@Octane,

Heck, I couldn't even see the lens at first! But on closer inspection the lens is pointing back towards the plate. Now, here's the bigger question. Does it work?? Most people never look back there and have no idea whether theirs is working or not. One night when you remember, go out there turn all the lights on and check them. You could have been driving around with all kinds of lights not working and wouldn't know it. Go get your wife or kid and have them sit in the seat and push down on the brake peddle and see if your brake lights come on to, blinkers to, although you can check them yourself. And here's the biggie! Do your back up lights come on when you are in reverse??? I installed a spot light back there and wired it into my back up light wiring because you know the little back up light in the tail light housing won't light up anything.

I know what you mean. Like they say, is the refrigerator light on when the door is closed, or only when the door is open? Lol
