On a 305? Start with 12 or 14 BTDC, and then keep dialing it up until it pings. SBCs LOVE advance. Keep advancing it until it pings under load (like pushing up a hill at low speed with your foot in it), then back off two degrees. You'll probably end up with 16-20 degrees of advance. Together with the centrifugal advance (20 degrees on the stock disti), that will make 36-40 degrees total timing.

Ya, I have no clue, but that gives me something to aim for

as i said befor, when you time it, make sure it STARTS. Let it get to operating temp befor trying to restart it.

got it timed tonight, it is set to 12 btdc at idle, no idea higher rpms. vacuum advance is hooked up to a ported source for simplicity. EDIT: just watched the qjet video and I guess it is hooked to manifold.... probably could have set it for more advance, but I think I will wait until i get headers and a new exhaust because everything is shot.

my horrible missing sound was the EGR! when we unplugged the line it was teed off, everything started to run better and the miss went away! so for now the EGR is installed and unplugged. no more vacuum leak and truck is running great!!! i think it was hooked up to the wrong port, so might try to connect it to a proper one tomorrow

took it out, hit the interstate and tried to set the cruise (nope, darn) 80mph for 20 miles and no problems. it won't win any races, but for my current purposes it should be good to go. overall running very very good. would like more timing, and will add more in the future, but for now I am happy I can drive it again if i want too!

Glad to hear you got it figured out. Yep, EGR will sure do it. We all overlooked that suggestion. I guess because you had mentioned you just changed all the other stuff and didn't give any thought to the EGR. We fix lots of problem that end up being EGR related.

After watching the qjet video, I learned that the egr shouldn't be hooked to manifold vacuum...guess where the PO had it hooked?

Going to buy vacuum hose today and going to redo all of it for at least the stuff I need.
