OK cool. Just look at the pics I posted and they show where to get the #'s from on the passeger side. Next time I get to the shop, I'll take pics of one with the pressure taps on the passenger side so everyone knows what they look like. The pressure taps and the rainbow make it very easy to tell if its good one or not a good one. Also the 700r4 has the 4 wire square plug on the driver side for the lock up converter wiring. But if you got a big round plug in on the passenger side, then its a 4L60-E model. Which is still good to have as a core, cuz the 4L60-E has some better hard parts in it, that you can go backwards compatible to the 700r4 and make the 700r4 better.

As promised, here are some more pics to help identify a 700r4 aka 4L60. And also a pic that clearly identifies a 4L60-E. First pic is of a 700r4. This is not a favorable or preffered 700r4 case. You can see the 3 pressure taps on the side of the case. One of the taps is hidden behind the TV Cable. This is usually a sign that is NOT a favorable 700r4 case. But, you must go ahead and look at the first digit of the # that designates the year because the taps were on cases thru 88 and early 89's. So just because it has taps, don't rule it out until you have checked the year. Just that you know for sure, if it doesn't have the taps on the passenger side, then you for certain its a preffered case without checking the #'s. Without taps its an 89-92 case. In this pic with the 3 pressure taps, you'll see the series of #'s, first one being a 4. That tells me, this is an 84 case and NOT one of the preffered cases.
2nd Pic is of a 4L60-E. Easily identified by the round plastic plug-in for the computer controls. Also, NO TV CABLE. Pretty straight forward on identifying one of those and that will be a 93 or later transmission.

Here is another pic of a favorable trans. Notice NO pressure taps. The TV cable is also removed from this one. And you can see the #'s. This is 2 of my good preffered builder cores in 2WD transmisisons. Easily converted to 4x4 trans, by removing the 2WD output shaft which is the first thing that goes in after the selective thrust washer, and replacing it with a 4x4 output shaft. Also, 4x4 trans does not use the aluminum tailshaft housing since the Tcase adapter acts as the tailshaft housing. So you notice the 2 in the #'s. Both of these are 1992 700r4/4L60 trans cores. I picked these up from the same guy. $25 for both with torque converters included.

Thanks for posting the pics, man! One question....You keep talking about pressure taps and I'm not sure what those are. Could you post a pic with arrows showing me what the pressure taps are?

The one tap is hidden in the pic behind the TV Cable.

Usually the only purpose of those is for testing and diagnosis. Each tap goes to a differant part of the trans. There is also a main line tap on the driver side of the models that don't have these 3 taps, so you can still do diagnosis on model without these 3 taps as shown.

Thanks O77.

HR great job with the trans info. I will probably be crawling under the back of my Burb to check out a new muffler noise that cropped up so I will try and remember to pic my trans and stuff while I am under there to compare, that's if it aint snowing. Thanks HR.
