Speed sensor question — 700R4

Got. 1990 2wd Burb. I believe these came stock with 700R4. Anyhoot, finally getting around to installing my Dakota Digital gauges and immediately came upon a road block. First picture is what I believe is my speed sensor location. Is that correct?

Well, my issue is this is the Dakota Digital sensor. Is there threaded piece behind that plate or what is the deal here?

Looks like the Dakota adaptor is setup for the mechanical speedo gear? Looks like you have the wrong adaptor to me.

I agree. you can probably tap into the existing VSS for the Dakota gauges? not sure if you need to do that before or after the DRAC....

It’s got wires that run into it :shrug:

You would either need to convert your trans to mechanical or get a different Dakota adaptor I think. Or maybe no adaptor because you're transmission has a sensor.

Reading through the instructions for the 153rd time I think you all might be right. I was trying to the top left solution and I think I need bottom left

You guys already nailed it but the adapter is for a mechanical output that you don't have.

You can grab the signal from the sensor itself or from the drac output to the factory gauge I believe. Either way you've got to calibrate it so it shouldn't matter.

You may need to tap into the signal after the DRAC module, so your cruise control still works and you don't get the service engine light popping on for a VSS code?

yep, that should have the reluctor wheel on the output shaft instead of the plastic gear.

(Like me an my pile of C10 parts can talk :lol: :sad72: )
Once I finally figured out which way was up with the speed sensor issue it was time for the next thing so I wasn't able to circle back around to it. With that said, my two oldest boys are out of town this week so that means no baseball this week so I'm planning on parking the burb in the garage tonight and knocking out throughout the course of this week. Tonight, I hope to do the underhood stuff (coolant temp sensor, oil pressure sensor....gonna be a pain in the butt!, and the tach signal off the distributor) and get that routed into the cabin, at least. Then the rest of the week will be getting all the wires ran to the brains and then the calibration of speedo, fuel,....

I had the same question with my Dakota Digital setup with a 700R4. Since you already have the two-wire VSS sender on your trans, you shouldn't need the mechanical speedo converter. The way to hook it up is to run the two wires from the trans VSS to the "SPD-" and "SPD SND" ports on the DD box, like the instructions say. The catch I ran into after that was that I got a check engine code 24 for a VSS "Open Circuit". Dakota Digital support then clued me in on one extra step: wire the "Speed Out" port from the DD box to the ECU port A10 (Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal). Once I did that, it was all happy.

So you can't go straight from the DRAC to the DD box to get the speed output? According to the pinout info I'm finding that is the light blue/black stripe wire coming out of the C15 port on the DRAC.

@Old77 Not to change the subject, but, YOU brought it up. In the Baseball world, how old are your boys and what positions do they play? My Bride and my world kinda revolves around Baseball and Softball......year round:banana-mario:
