Hello,

I recently purchased another squarebody and am wanting to decode the factory colors. As you can see in the picture below it is a Silverado model with ZY4 deluxe paint scheme. I'm assuming the color codes are the 76D and 68L? What does the D and L stand for and what color's do these come up to?? I can't seem to find it anywhere. Thanks!

My 84 Monte Carlo had a paint code of 27L - they told me back then it was a lacquer. You cant find that color anymore under 27....now a WA**** number.

68L is a mahogany metallic.

I looked up mahogany mettalic and yes definitely that is the main color. I believe the secondary color on mine is white but white is a 12 paint code. No idea what 76D means then

Well, maybe that sheet is from a different truck? Because the 1982 Vehicle information kit doesn't even show those paint colors as an option in 1982... at all. Here's the information kit: https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/do...its/Chevrolet-Trucks/1982-Chevrolet-Truck.pdf

The YE9 is Silverado package, and the ZY4 is deluxe 2-tone paint, so the top of the cab and the bottom stripe would be a secondary color and the rest would be the primary color.

I'm going to have to do more digging apparently. The VIN on this RPO code sheet is the same as the main VIN locations so that makes no sense. I'll have to check if the RPO code list is also on the front inner fender and compare the two.

It’s not common, but at one point GM allowed you to special order colors that were used on other GM vehicles. For example, you might see a Camaro in your favorite color and want to use that on your truck. I don’t know if they allowed this on a squarebody.

My 1985 k10s original color was 9V6 gunmetal metallic grey. It was a mini van color then and looks like mine was a custom order. From what I can find is gunmetal grey was also an option for the outdoorsman edition. Unfortunately I know mine wasn’t one.

Does it look like mine - 2 toned? Maybe to help you figure out if it is still the original color, look in a spot that maybe hasn't been painted for main color. Under carpet,on back side of metal part of dash. as far as the secondary color, well, might find a small remnant of color somewhere. Maybe behind cargo light (if there is one), behind the trim. Then find a color card for that year. I only have for '78 or I would pass on. Don't know if this helps, just some thoughts.

Had a painter tell me once he looked for original colors on firewalls, under carpet/seats or dashes, and the 2 tones on the sides he looked inside the gas filler doors or under trims. Said alot of times guys just masked off instead of removing them.
