I have a dumb question. Why do I have a step down on my transfer case that doesn't step down anything it is stamped 1:1.000 ratio. Does this thing do anything other than turn the cable 90 degrees? It was loose and leaking oil from the T case, so I pulled it to see if it needed replacing... but can I just take it off?

If I understand right, if you pull the speedo gear housing out of the Tcase, you're going to have a big hole and a leak in the side of the Tcase.

I'm talking about the ratio adapter. It looks like his thing, the gray box with the cable plugged in:

Mine looks similar, but gives the cable a 90 degree turn too.

I've used them before on other T cases, but only to change the ratio for bigger tires, etc. I've never seen one with a 1:1 ratio. I figured it must do something else, but I can't figure out what.

Oh I get it, you're talking about the ratio converter. For some reason I think an NP203 requires that. Maybe it's because they don't have swappable gears to correct the speedo.

My '79 had one and it always leaked. When I did the axle swap to 3/4 axles, the ratio went from a 3.08 to 4.10. All I had to do was remove this adapter and screw the speedo cable directly into the 203 case. I got lucky that the original ratio in the case matched my new gears. My speedo worked correctly and I never had a leak after that.

I would think you could just do away with your adapter.

Awesome. Thanks, Craig.
I still can't figure why anyone would make or install a 1:1 adapter though.

Perhaps to make a 90 degree turn?
