I wanted some of you vets opinion on my new investment/project.

I bought the truck for $500 knowing the transmission was probably bad. It would go in reverse, but not drive. I put it in drive and I can hear the engine rpm's drop and can feel it engage but it won't go forward. When I got it, I checked the fluid levels and they were WAY WAY WAY too high (almost 1/3 the way up the dipstick, cold) dark, and smelt burnt. I was tempted to put a new filter on and put the pan back on and put the correct amount of fluid in it and see if the fluid level caused the issue, but I figured with the condition of the old fluid, it probably has something else wrong.

I also did some other research on it and im not sure if its a good combination or not, but I believe it has the 305 v8/th350/NP241C/GM 10 bolt (which is leaking). After reading the 700r4 to th350 4x4 thread, I went and looked and it has that conversion spacer. I'm not sure if they did the same thing as in the thread with the output shaft, cutting off 1 1/2 in, but I know it was running fine till the transmission stopped working.

I've attached a few pictures. Any insite would be greatly appreciated.

Caleb

You stole that for $500.
Welcome to GMSB. Hopefully we'll get together and take care of the Th350 in the next week or so. It's slow around the shop on Saturday and not many people here on the weekends at the impound yard. It's not far from Tinker AFB. I just impounded a Monte Carlo off TAFB last night at the Air Depot/SE29th gate.

Instead of a steal, it was a deal. One of my friends that I work with just wanted to get rid of it after the AT went out, so he gave me a good deal on it. I'm hoping there isnt too much else mechanically wrong. I'm hoping to make it my daily driver before winter. Right now my only vehicle is my harley. That won't be very nice once it gets cold here.

I'm sorry but I'm kinda new to all the terminology but what do you mean by passenger side drop?

Passenger side drop = the front drive shaft exits the t-case on the passenger side of the trans, because the front differential is offset towards that side in the front axle. I didn't think the 241 was available like that, because the factory didn't use them until the next body style of trucks when the front differential migrated to the drivers side with the independent front suspension.

One of the other guys on here may know something that I don't, but I would get some more pics of the t-case under your truck, and verify that no-one switched tags or something. Normally these trucks had a 208 t-case in the mid '80s models.

HotRodPC states that the NP241c is available for square bodies and are passenger side drop. I will still take more pictures of it and post them though. It is extremely dirty though so it may be hard to tell.

And yes, they normally did come with a 208, but they also normally came with a 700r4 transmission as well. I have the th350 in it. I'm thinking one of the previous owners changed out both of those.

Odd. I've read that thread before too, just never noticed that he referenced the 241 as having a passenger side drop before. I'm really curious now as to what model and driveline config they used a passenger drop 241 in.

Forward clutches are probably toast leaving you only reverse. Of course the whole transmission is now polluted with clutch material and a full tear-down/cleaning/rebuild is the best way to approach it. Welcome to the forum!
