I'm in the process of extending my bed, have anyone ever done this before? I have a 1988 Chevy R30 (old Bellsouth truck) I bought it with the bed on it, but I believe it had a toolbox bed. If I put the wheel arch dead center of the rear wheel I have a 5 inch gap between the can and bed.

There have been at least a few with lengthened beds, but they had a couple feet or so added in.

It might be easier just to slide the spring hangers forward on the frame 5 inches, then whack off the offending frame rails at the rear.

Is the goal a longer bed, or just a bed that fits the truck properly?

Mainly a bed that fits right, but I'm torn in between just making it longer to be different.

I like the idea of longer bed for the sake of being different. I've never done it but it can't be rocket science. I'd get your existingbed exactly where you want it to sit relative to the wheel and wheel wells. Then take your measurements of what it'd take to add the necessary length. Than I'd get another donor bed and cut out what you need to lengthen it. The hard part is going to be that I'm betting you're going to need to have fairly precise cuts to graft the two beds together and have it look right. Then to finish it off I'm guessing the bodywork involved will have to be fairly extensive. Either way, I've got my popcorn ready  :)

Welcome I’m with @bucket on this and I’ll cut anything up. If it was a foot I’d say cut it but for 5” I’d slide the hangers and would probably accept a standard drive shaft.

I'm with @bucket, and @Honky Kong jr. That is a lot off work just for 5 inches. The axle shouldn't be centered any way, usually the axle is about 2 inches foward to allow for axle swing.
