To continue with this thread about Quadrajets and such how come you don't sell kits to repair these things? I know that repairing them is a large part of what you do... but looking at your prices its $250 for a rebuild.

I am located up in Canada and by the time shipping costs and exhange take in to account I could buy a new one. But if I had a kit it would be cheaper and viable for me to do. I know there are other groups out there that supply said kits.. but its one thing that could bring you extra money as well.

Well, long story, but I have been working on quadrajets, and other carbs since the 70's. They were just a few years old then and a kit worked fine. Now, they are 40+ years old and a kit just doesn't cut it. 10 years ago, I was still putting in kits for friends and other drag racers, and kept finding other items needing replaced. So I sourced my parts for a complete build. There are sources for good parts, and what I chose to do, was find the best quality parts I could find, and get all my components that I use from that source. It happens to be www.cliffshighperformance.com, which is Cliff Ruggles, the guy that wrote the book. He also builds quadrajets, and has over a year wait. I don't get either of his standard kits for my builds, I custom order parts for each build, since I replace so many parts with fresh new components, that are selected based on engine modifications and driving desire. It does cost me a little more per build, but I also don't have to order a custom wound spring for power piston in 20,000 quantity.

Shipping to Canada. Yes, expensive to ship a carb to me, to ship it back. I ship carbs all over the world. It works out best to let me source a carb to build for you. I have over 100 cores in my inventory, or I can buy one to build. Usually runs $50 unless it is a rare items that is higher cost to obtain. So, I could source a quadrajet and build it for you for $275 and ship it USPS international for probably about $50? $325 total estimated. Cost does go up slightly for higher modifications necessary or electric choke conversion.

I try to keep cost low enough that most people can have a good quadrajet for best fuel economy and performance, for less than grabbing an Eddy at the parts stores. I enjoy doing them, and it keeps me busy on nights and weekends. And it helps to fund my Buick drag race habits, and my 89 blazer.

I shipped Mark a carb USPS the other day and with insurance it was $12. I know fed ex is more expensive, and crap I just realized that you in Canada, so Idk how USPS works for you. He's not joking about the year wait for cliff to do it. I checked on it before I found Mark. You can send him the specs on your motor and your elevation and whatnot and he can custom build it. By the time you figure in doing all that as well as taking it apart to seal the well plugs and all that, you can't buy a carb off the shelf and do it yourself for $350. I'm not trying to help him sell carbs. I don't even know him. But I checked into all of that before I had him build mine and although I haven't driven mine 5 miles since I got it put on, I still wouldn't have done it any other way. It's the most bang for your buck. I have a core that I was going to send in for a core charge, but if any of you guys need it I will send it to him on your behalf to cut down on shipping costs. Like I said it just costs me $12. The fact that my truck was a dog with the eddy on it, then switching to the qjet I was able to smoke the 33s made me a believer.

This is a good place to get a re-man Q-jet. The ND4478 shown in this link has the correct throttle plate geometry for a 700R4.

Hey bud you should Google national on the web.... there was a guy on Dallas cl a while back ranting about how they sent him the wrong carb. Tho he never installed it they still wouldn't take it back for an exchange. Lots of other bad builds out there as well. Plus they supply auto zone with carbs, so watch out

Yep until you gouge out the center bore on the throttle plate and your throttle shaft binds. Then your only option is a new throttle plate.

The correct way is with a back cutting reamer bit.

Just saying. It's coming from the horses mouth. The drill bits have stop bushings on them. To let you know when it is time to stop. If he sold the back cut reamer it would cost twice as much...being a custom bit in all. Just saying bro

I have no issue with installing bronze bushings. The problem is that the only part of the throttle shaft bore that doesn't wear, or is last to wear is the center between the two primary bores.

the bit he sells is a drill bit from top to bottom. It is stepped so that the drill bit can center in the bore while cutting a larger bore for the bushing it self as it is larger than the throttle shaft.

The problem is that you are using a drill bit to act as a centering tool. A drill bit centering in an aluminum bore is a disaster waiting to happen.

A back cutting reamer uses a long smooth shaft to center with. The shaft of the reamer is inserted through the throttle shaft bore and then connected to a drill so you have a drill, throttle bore plat and then the cutter on the other side. You pull the cutter into the plate with it being centered on the smooth shaft of the reamer.

With the reamer it is impossible to gouge the bore causing misaligned bushings because you are not rotating a drill bit through the aluminum Throttle shaft bore. You get a perfect alignment every time with the reamer. The other advantage is that the shaft of the reamer is inserted through and guided by all 3 portions of the throttle shaft bore thus causing an even better alignment then the drill bit can ever achieve. This fact is compounded when the throttle plate it self is not truly flat.
