Hi, just got a 1981 c10 stepside long bed with 3 on-the-tree and a locked up 250 6 cyl. Starting to investigate engine options for it.... leaning toward an earlier 250 non-integrated head engine, If I can get a running one cheap. Came on this forum to see what is involved if just swap to a v-8 instead. Before getting this project truck, I've been working mostly on air cooled vw's.

Thanks for your posts!

Rusty.

Howdy!

Part of me says put a V8 in it and have fun. But on the other hand, 6cyl trucks are getting scarce these days. I don't know how people kill a 250, mine was seemingly indestructible.

I like the looks and simplicity of the 6 cylinder engines from the pre-integrated head years. I see cheap 250's listed for sale where V8 swaps have been made to cars and trucks. My logical side says to swap in a 350, but either way, I'll probably leave the 3 speed manual in for now.

answer to the original question, you have to change to v8 motor mounts.need a v8 pressure plate as they are weighted different.everything else will bolt back up.lengthen some wires.been a long time ago since i done this conversion, but i think i just change the upper part of the motor mount or you bolt the bottom in different holes that exist in the frame.been a couple of guys on here that did the swap, they can fill on the details.

Thank you Farmer. From the other posts I've read so far, what you mention looks about right. That does make it tempting to drop in a V8 and be done.
