Grinding noise with part-time 203

What would cause a grinding noise in a np203 TC that had a part time kit in it all of a sudden? It was driven for a few years with the kit in it before it started making the noise. The kit was then taken out and made full time again and the noise stopped.

Finally getting around to the tcase and found my answer last night. I found the old kit that was taken out at my parents house and the gears were stripped. Don't have a picture of them but its pretty obvious. I took the tailshaft cover off the tcase last night and found this underneath! Don't know how it still worked right...
