Well I have a 86 K5 and the previous owner installed a electric fuel pump but the location is got me wondering. Cold in the morning it feels like its running out of gas until you get into the throttle. At highway speed it chokes out a bit before going. I have replaced plugs and plug wires. Also replaced the fuel filter in the engine bay thats before the pump. Nothing after the pump to the carb. The engine is a L-19 454 converted to carb. Edelbrock 1406 carb and Edelbrock performer Z-O intake manifold. Thanks for any suggestions.

1406 Eldebrock is only a 600 cfm carb im thinking it might be a touch small.

Sounds to me like you have a stumble related more to the carb.

An undersized carb should actually help, with nice snappy throttle response. It just kills the power in the upper RPM.

Looks like a general purpose fuel pump from the parts store. Where is it mounted again?

I like Holley carbs, but your current carb may just need some tuning or a refresh.

Its mounted in the engine bay on the passenger side fender well. It just feels like it does have much power when its at highway speeds. I've adjusted the carb by turning the screws in all the way and out all the way. Then back half way in. Is that correct? Or what kind of tune are you talking about? Rebuilding the carb?

Pump is mounted too far from the fuel tank. Electric fuel pumps are good at 'pushing' fuel, but not good at 'pulling'.

Most of the reading I've done says the same thing you are saying. I wanted your guys input, it seems a lot of you guys know what your talking about. This is my first carb. So will a fuel pressure regulator also help? What fuel pressure should this engine run with it being converted to a carb from a tbi?

Believe or not, if this is a stock Squarebody 454, 600cfm is not to small for a Peanut Port head 454.

For sure, it does sound like some dirty circuits in the carb. Gotta keep Eddy's clean and they will work well. Where that fuel pump is now, I'd put an inline filter in.

And for sure, move that pump back under the truck as close to the fuel tank switch valve as possible. Always best to have an E pump as close to the tank as possible.

After you move the pump near the selector switch, test your fuel pressure.

If it's over 4.5 or so, get a regulator. My 1406 flooded something fierce if fuel pressure was over this. Holley's seem to be just fine at 6psi...which is what most e-pumps for carb are rated at.

Thanks for the replies HotRodPC and AJI. I will do that but it probably wont be until I get back from my regular run down to Texas and back up to Montana, before I can get back home.

750 q jet from SMI Carburetor, or a Holley Truck Avenger.

Believe or not, if this is a stock Squarebody 454, 600cfm is not to small for a Peanut Port head 454.

I believe it. IIRC, the Eddy on my 79's 454 is only a dinky 500 cfm. The motor is not stock and the carb does kill off a lot of power in the upper range, but dang that throttle response is insane.

I know you'd believe it. Moreless speaking to those who think you need a 1050 Dominator for a SBC 400 with an RV cam.
