1987 R-10, I’ve dropped my 16gal tank and am going to install a 20gal. I noticed today that LMC shows a different shaped filler neck for the 20. It’s more U shaped than the 16gal L shaped. Can I just put a rubber hose extension on my 16gal filler neck or is the different shape necessary? When I pulled my old filler off, I had to cut a rubber hose I was going to replace anyway. FYI, the metal in the photo has been cleaned and prepped for replacement. Thanks for the help.

I think I understand...

The 20 gallon tanks use a single L-shaped rubber hose to connect the fuel filler neck to the fuel tank. The 16 gallon tanks use two rubber hoses with an intermediate steel tube between them. That's the part you have pictured, and I looks like you cut the rubber hose at the filler neck mounted on the box.

When you go to the new 20 gallon tank, you'll need to get the correct rubber hoses (#3 & #5 in the picture below), and everything should work out like intended.

Also be aware that the diameter of those fuel filler hoses is different depending on the year (smaller diameter 73-81 and larger diameter 82 and later).

I’ve done this swap on my truck. Definitely get the right hoses. I did not think about that and had to “engineer” myself a fill hose. Besides that, easy peasy. Only bummer is the plastic shield from the 16’s doesn’t fit the 20’s (duh) but I haven’t found a suitable replacement that does. Driving on Houston highways scares the crap out of me with no shield, too much stuff on the road to test the strength of my tanks!
