Turn meter on. Switch to volts. Switch to DC volts. Touch red to Positive and black to ground. Read meter.

Set multimeter to VDC. Sometimes symbolized as a dash with dots over it as opposed to a teal (~), which is VAC.

Hook black lead to batt (-) or any good ground.

With engine running and at warm idle, touch red lead to batt (+).

Shouldn’t read more than +15v or less than +12v. At idle it’s probably high 12-14ish.

You can also do a simple test on the battery the same way, but without the engine running.

If I’m reading the meter right, I’m getting 12.4 volts with the truck idling. The battery case isn’t cracked from what I can see. I put a ton of baking soda in there and let it sit overnight. Rinsed it out and put some more soda in the bottom of the tray in an effort to catch any more acid runoff. I guess I’ll have to keep an eye on it and see what happens. When I have more time I’ll repaint the battery tray.
