A few months ago, I found and bought an '88 Suburban on Craigslist for $1800. The ad said it had a Jasper 350 installed about a year prior and he had the transmission set up for towing since he used it as his tow truck for his job.

I bought it to eventually replace my wife's 2007 Eddie Bauer Expedition. It's nice, but too small for a full sized SUV. The space behind the rear seat is laughable since it isn't an EL version.

There is very little rust on it. The rust on the roof just looks like surface rust at this point. It's an A/C truck, 4WD and is sitting on 32*11.5*15 BFG ATs. I drove it home just fine, but since then has decided that it doesn't want to shift out of first gear. I researched what I could and will replace the pressure control solenoid in the coming weeks when I do a transmission fluid and filter change. If anybody has another idea as to the cause, I'd appreciate it.

Plans are to do an interior restoration/customization and new paint along with getting it as dependable as it should. Later on I would like to put in a modern power train for better mileage and towing. I drove it about 80 miles last time and it got about 14 mpg.

Is it a V10 or a V20? What transmission does it have in it? On the transmission (if it's a TH400), I'd suggest first looking to make sure the vacuum modulator is getting vacuum and replacing it if you can't see anything wrong with it at the end of your diagnoses. A stuck valve body/governor can also act like this, or a stripped governor gear can be problematic.

If it's a 700R4, please tell me you had the TV cable connected to the TBI and it looks at least moderately adjusted. If this is your transmission, and your cable is adjusted properly, I'd disconnect it and pull it very hard towards you several times (the front of the vehicle) because I had a stuck valve body in mine back in the spring where it wouldn't shift out of first, and that trick fixed it. I would also pop the governor cap and inspect it if you haven't found your issue by then to make sure the weights move freely and the gear isn't stripped.

My Burb had a sticky governor for a while. To get it to shift, you would have to nail it and wind it out, then let off and it would shift. But after that it would start in second gear until the truck got parked and shut off.

V10 is an 87-91 1/2 ton 4x4 and V20 is an 87-91 3/4 ton 4x4. The best way to identify the trans model is the pan.
