A new little wrinkle…the ignition switch does not kill the engine. I need to put it 4th and let out the clutch while standing on the brakes. Then the next day it works fine.
What do you think is the issue?

sounds like an issue with the switch on the column but wait until others chime in before you go spending dough.

I would add an issue with the rod going into the switch IF it wasn’t intermittent like it is (i.e. bent). X2 on the switch itself.

It seems to only happen in reverse…if it’s going to happen at all.

Floor shifter? Not sure who that would make a difference. I too agree with the 2 above. I was first thinking a bend in the rod also. I'd check that first since it's free to rebend the rod of it's that all it is, although you'd need to figure out what caused the bend. Then #2, consider the switch itself if it continues.

It seems to do it now every time it's in reverse. If I move the shifter to neutral, the engine will die like I want.
This rig has not been driven for a long time, so now that it gets a little to a lot of driving nearly every day I think something has become unstuck, like some "California-nanny-state-safety-switch."
By the way, my new AC Delco ignition (tilt wheel) switch arrived in the mail yesterday! Maybe I'll need it someday.
