ok this is my first post and I am needing some help. I have an 83 k20 with a 91 700r4 and np203 transfer case with a new crate 350. when I purchased the truck the tv cable wasn't hooked up. when the truck is in 2wd it does not want to move at all but it does move when I put it into 4wd. I don't know whether my transmission or my transfer case is the problem so I need some more input before I go throwing more money into it.

Hopefully no one drove it with the TV cable unhooked as that would cause transmission damage.

But the no go in 2wd and go in 4wd is a transfer case issue.

Im curious why you have a np203 behind a 91 700r4 in an 83 k20 ?

IMO that is the worst transfer case ever made. Well maybe not the worst but one that I have no desire to ever own.

Not sure on how to fix this but...
Do you have a lemon law in your state? Where if you buy something for like $1000 or more you have like a month or something to return it if theres something drastically wrong with it not disclosed when sold?

If you do, consider it. Unless you got this thing cheap and plan on putting a lot of work in, i'd look into the lemon law

I only paid 800 for it and its just going to be a truck to have some fun in when I can till I decide to maybe restore it

that is a 208 looks like the 8 stamped funny

I would think shift fork issue the fork spreads and does not engage the gears right so you might be in neutral and that might be why the no go

well just so you know the 88-93 700r4s are the most desirable to rebuild as they have internal features that the earlier years did not. So keep the core for a future rebuild. the 203 might be worth something to someone who is into rock crawling and could use it for parts to make a doubler with. But aside from that the 203 is a boat anchor.

Do you have a pic of the whole transfer case ? cause im willing to bet that is a 208 not a 203. The 208s were not bad I have 2 of them that have never let me down.

If the TV cable was not hooked up I would bet the 208 shift linkage just needs to be adjusted properly.

ill try and get a picture of it tomorrow after work in the day light. after zooming in on the tag on my computer I think you are right and it looks like a faded 8 and not a 3

The thing is the case doesn't look like a 203 and the stamp says it was an 87'. 203s were not made in 87

the previous owner said the trans was from a 91 so I just assumed they used the tcase from the same truck. this is the best pic I can get right now

it is a 1987 np 208 no need for pictures that tag says it all

there was no 203 t case in a 87

and the 203 will not bolt directly to a 700r4 it can be done but not really a fast easy swap that some would do

check the linkage like suggested pull it off the shifter and see if you can get it to go into gear by push or pulling it. but I would bet its the shift fork
