305 3:42 gears and 31 are probably not the best combo. But it is what it is.

I have a strong 350 3:42 gears and worn 33s which are more like 31.5s these days and I usually don't put it into overdrive until im doing 100-110kmh/ 65-70mph

My setup seems under powered and under geared to me.

The 1500 rpm seems about the same though.

I got a new set of 3:42 3/4 ton axles with a mint 3/4 ton frame. 10 bolt front 14 bolt SF rear. Im thinking of throwing the TH400 back in and just running 33-35s

I believe your cable is not securing it's position as it should when the tab is locked in. If it is a good cable you would not have any problem staying in place after the tab is "locked in". Hate to ask but is the tab locked in place?

Right, which is why im putting 265/70's on tomorrow i hope, if they don't get to the shop on time they will go on next week due to my work schedule. I will only gain back about 50rpm, but even a lt235 it came with from the factory is only 0.5" shorter, so really not but better.

I will check the cable again, and see how it does with different tires. Really wish i had the tach installed before i changed the cables just so i could know where it shifted before. I will also get my speedo hooked back up so i can report a speed vs shift point.

Im hoping to put in a bigger engine of some sort next year, might just be a chevy 350 for simplicity unless i can find something cool for cheap (olds or caddy)

You will ruin the trans driving around without the cable properly adjusted. If the tab does not snap into place and stay it is bad...

Well I might just get a new cable and maybe be done with it. I know everyone has been telling me that the whole time, but I can be thick headed at times and it is a new cable.

Argh, that thing is a pita to change!

Does it matter if the button faces up or to the side? I think it only fits one way just figured I would ask.

Nope doesn't matter. Long as it stays locked in place.

OK, i will check it over good tonight before i drive it home from the tire shop. Right now I'm pretty sure it is too far out because it won't kick down. I will readjust it per the book, mark that setting and take it home and check it again. Hopefully it stays locked, i know the last time i messed with it i pulled it out a bit further

Readjusted cable tonight. Cable won't pull out at all with the accelerator pedal ( not supposed to use that for adjustment anyway, was just testing). Twisted the linkage it clicked out, went for a test drive and it didn't move. Kickdown works now, 1-2 shift is quite hard rest aren't bad. Under moderate throttle 1-2 @16mph, 2-3 @ 33mph, 3-4 @ 55mph. Wot 1-2 @ 30ish, 2-3 @ 45-50ish, 3-4 @ almost 70. I probably pulled the housing too far when I was tinkering with it.

Makes me question if my throttle isn't excessively stretched. Otherwise much much better.

Now move the cable forward a click at a time until you get a firm, but not harsh shift. It leave it like it is if you feel comfortable. Good luck bud

http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=7971.0

pretty much describes what I still have going on. new throttle cable on order, i'm guessing the one i have now is factory and hopefully explains why me pushing the pedal as far as it will go into the floor will result in a top speed of 72mph.

then I will have the readjust the TV cable, but at least I know that is working correctly now.

New accelerator cable helped. Shifts now at 4100 @ wot. Unsure if i should be getting a 4-2 or 3-1 downshift because I'm not but overall drives much better now
