I’m planning on putting an early 80’s 350 in my 78 c10. A friend of mine gave me a late 90’s 350 starter, I think. Will it work or should I buy a new one?

You should probably verify what starter your friend actually gave you. The I think in your statement concerns me. IF your friend gave you a SBC starter for sure, then you need to see if the bolt pattern is the same. There were 2 mounting patterns the blocks were drilled for either. But if your truck came with an angled mounting starter, you need to replace it with an angled mounting starter, and vice versa.

I have put a 1997 small block starter on my 1979 big block, a 1975 250 straight six, and a 1968 307.
They are small and powerful and if it fits, it should start your engine like a champ.

It all depends on which style starter they gave you and which size flexplate or flywheel gets used on the new-to-you 350.

153 tooth flywheel gets a straight bolt pattern starter. 168 tooth flywheel gets a staggered bolt pattern starter.
