250 inline 6 trans question

In my 78 I have a 250 inline 6 with a automatic 3speed. My question is what type of trans is it, and is there any other transmission that would bolt up with no problems. I need something with over drive it runs at 2,000 - 2,500 in 3rd gear going about 40 mph. And it is worse on the high way. I need something that will be smooth shifting and good for high ways and daily driving. Or maybe it could be getting better gears in the rear? Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.

It is a 1978 c10 big ten with 4.1L 250 fleetside

Any trans that bolts to an SBC or BBC will bolt to a Chevy inline 250. You can run a 700r4 overdrive trans, but there will be some minor mods needed. Like hooking the TV cable to the carb linkage.
