Hello, well first off I am new here and do not know if this is the right section to post this on, but I recently picked up a 1978 GMC Jimmy and I am currently installing a painless wiring harness in it since the previous owner tore half the old harness out. Does anyone know how to hook up the new painless harness to the wiper switch since the tech department at painless has been no help. The truck does have the pulse wipers. Thank you in advance, Chris

Do you have wiring diagrams?

I did search on this site and did find some wiring diagrams but i can not seem to match up the new painless kit with the original pigtail from the truck. Nothing is the same color. And the painless tech department has been no help at all.

Might be a few guys here that wired that Painless kit but they don't frequent too much, and I think they have later year trucks with the turn signal controls. Let me see who I can dig up.

Are the wires on the painless harness labeled? Is there at least the same number of wires on the painless harness?

On the painless part the are just labeled wiper switch and in the instruction under wiper switch it just says they go to the switch. The painless has 5 leads and the original one has 6, so one has to be a ground. thank you for your help.

I'd have to go back and check, but IIRC, the 77-earlier has 5 wires to the switch while the '78-later has 6 wires to the switch. That 6th wire is for the park switch used on the '78-later wiper motors. So once the new harness is routed and wired, you will have to run that 6th wire back to it's mate on the other side of the firewall (assuming the Painless harness plugs into the firewall junction box).

I forgot to mention, the best thing to do is trace the wires back to the firewall junction on the original harness and compare that to the Painless harness. Then you will know what colors splice together.

Wiring diagrams for both ends of the wiper/washer circuit (with pulse option). Also included a diagram for a standard (i.e. non-pulse switch). Although the color of the new harness wires don't match, you should be able to figure it out.

This is what those of us who are "color deficient" go through whenever doing a repair on non-numbered wiring. My kids laugh their asses off when I ask them to check my work!

Sorry about the pop ups but I don't have time to re-post the jpg's - if you see a wind turbine or a ******** clad lady - just x them out at the bottom.

Just found the correct diagrams for a 1978:
