Hello

I blew the rear end out of my snow plow suburban the other day and recently bought another 10 bolt 6 lug rear axle with 342 gears.
Today I opened the diff cover again and noticed one of the teeth on the ring gear has a small chip.
The day before at the junk yard I pulled the Diff cover to confirm the gear ratio but did not notice the chip.

I have spun the axle by hand and is seems nice and smooth.
There is only a very minimal amount of pinion play between the pinion and the ring gear.

The teeth on the pinion are all there with only one micro nick out of the edge on the pinion, not even hardly noticeable.

I have photos of the ring gear but not sure if I will be allowed to post them or not.

I only paid $212 dollars for the axle.

With out spending more money does anyone think it would be safe to run?

The magnet appears to have caught a average amount of wear filings.

Make sure it's all cleaned out so you don't have junk getting mixed in and chewed up in the gears causing more damage, new gear oil and SEND IT !!!

I'd run that one without doubt, especially if it's what I had.

I would want to know what caused the chip. Look around and see if anything came loose and got chewed up in it. If you baby it, it might last a little while but I wouldn't expect much more than 15-20k out of it.

I was trying to think of something that would show up even with the oil on the gears and have him paint it that ring and send it for a spin to see the pattern and how it looked. Can you think of anything? Maybe a glob of wheel bearing or white lithium grease on about 5 teeth???

I've seen chipped teeth gears go thousands and thousands of miles and not even whine. Not sure what caused it but it was fine.

White lithium is what a lot of people use instead of buying the paint

Does anyone know if a 1988 to 1998 chevy truck 10 bolt 5 lug rear end fit in a 1989 Chevy suburban?

I found a 1988 to 1998 Chevy truck 10 bolt with 342 gears, Im thinking I could put my 6 lug axles in it and run it under the suburban.

Just not sure if that would work or not.
Might be different spline count or the leaf springs might not line up.

Any ideas?

Leaf spring perches are spaced wider on the 88-98 compared to the squares. 42.5" vs 47"

Cool
Thanks
Seems like those 88 to 98 rear ends are everywhere and for cheap.

Here are some pictures of the 10 bolt in the snow plow.
It probably would not have been so bad if I did not have to continue driving it when it broke.
