Engine advice; rebuild, replace or put on a new pan???

Given that you are moving I would try and nurse the truck along till you get to your new place. If it didn't make any noise that mas too horrible when it started to smoke, then I would put a used pan on it and see how it goes. Unless you are confident that you can complete the swap before you...

    Rebuild, or replace

I wouldn't call it easy, more like stressful lol. I've done a decent amount of engine work, and I gotta say this transmission seems a lot tougher. But its my first so maybe its all gravy after the first lol? You must be a search engine wizard. I googled trans diagrams for about 30 minutes with...

    Rebuild, or replace

The carnage is now in full swing. I see why most guys won't even attempt to rebuild an automatic transmission. It's a bear of a job, especially at the home garage. I have this repair manual for the trans: https://www.ebay.com/i/like/351690844939?chn=ps&dispItem=1. However, it doesn't have a...

    1987 chevy suburban acceleration problems

Piggy backing off of what 97 Jimmy said, I'd check the fuel pressure with gauge. It sounds like your not getting enough fuel to the injectors. If possible, and you may have to be creative here, I'd check the fuel pressure under load.

    Rebuild, or replace

Thanks for the tip on the book shortbed. I will pick that up. Just out of curiosity, what is the main difference between the pre 87 700 and the 87 and newer 700. I only ask, because I think me and a friend, who worked as a transmission tech for a few years are going to rebuild my 700. Perhaps...

    Rebuild, or replace

74 shortbed, thanks for the info, it is much appreciated. What year/models did the 194 six come in? I may be able to source a reman 194 head for cheap via my Job. Yev, while the 4.8 would be a sweet setup, I think it would be a little too much for my daliy driver, and a little above means at...

    Rebuild, or replace

Unfortunately, I can't post a picture right now, as I am away from the vehicle. But I will try to do so as soon as possible. However, I am quite certain at this point it is the 700r4. 74 shortbed, do you have any experience swapping heads on the 250? Will any chevy inline 6 head (194, 250...

    Rebuild, or replace

It is looking like 700R4 to me. It also looks like it takes the same filter as the 2004r. I pulled these number off the side of the transmission: 4MC213D. Any way to decode a trans ID number? I've googled some Trans ID decoder etc. but nothing is really definitive. Is the 700r4 a good trans...

    Rebuild, or replace

Thanks everyone for your replies! So it seems the 350 wouldn't be too difficult to swap in the engine bay, but really I guess its about engine/ transmission compatibility if I go the 350 route. Honestly, I am having some trouble identifying the transmission in this thing. It has a 16 bolt...

    Rebuild, or replace

Hi all, Looking for some help deciding which direction to go with my 83 c10. This past weekend I lost 3rd gear in my auto transmission. The truck has 250 inline six with the integrated head, and what I believe to be the th200 auto trans. The trans has always been a little weak when going from...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

Chengy I hope not! Honestly, the truck hasn't burnt any noticeable oil since ive owned it. It does have a small oil leak at the pan, but no blue smoke etc. With the new electric pump it runs as good as it ever did. No noises from the engine. I kind of astonished this old 250 still runs this...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

So I think I've figured out the issue. Today I wired & plumbed up a Mr. Gasket electronic fuel pump. Truck got fuel all the way to the carb, and the truck ran like a champ, very misleadingly . I decided to change the oil as I've been priming the carb so much that I was worried about gas in...

    Weird and Worrisome Symptoms

I would start with a compression test. If you have low compression in a cylinder, then throw a teaspoon of oil in cylinder with low compression and re run the test on that cylinder. If the compression jumps up you have bad rings. If the compression doesn't bump up then it may be a valve is not...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

Hi All, I removed the filter in between the tank, and the fuel pump with no change. Still no fuel getting to the pump, or coming out of the pump outlet. Its pretty unreal. The thing that gets me about this whole problem is that when the problem initially started, the truck was starving for...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

Hi all, apologies for the delayed response. I have been playing with this issue some more. I rigged up an old gear oil container i cleaned out with some brake cleaner to make a gravity fuel feed to the carb. Truck ran fine this way. It ran thru approximately 1/2 a quart of fuel from the...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

GeorgeB & 87jimmy- I disconnected the lines at the fuel tank to metal line connection where line connects with tank and ran a rubber hose into a gas can. No love. The pump did not pull any gas from the can either. Primed the float and let it run for a minute each try. After theses failed...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

GeorgeB- That is a good idea, I will place the a fuel can near the location of the fuel tank once I get home and see if it draw fuel from there. When I originally did the fuel can test it was close to the fuel pump itself. 87Jimmy- If GeorgeB's suggestion to place a gas can near the tank...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

GeorgeB-Thanks for the response! I will hook the pump back up to a gas can again when I get home today and verify it will draw from a can. I'd just hate to drop the tank again and not resolve the issue. 87 Jimmy- I do have a fuel pressure gauge in my box, but the issue is that it won't even...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

87 GMC jimmy thanks for the reply! When I bought the truck around six months ago I replaced the sending unit, the new sending unit came with brand new sock on the pickup tube. When i pulled the new sending unit out it looked basically new, like the day I installed it (I've only put around...

Fuel Pump won't draw fuel from tank

Hi All, The issue that I am having trouble solving is that the mechanical fuel pump on 1983 C10 won't pull fuel (or enough fuel) from the tank. Some info on the truck: 1983 c10 250 inline six 2 barrel 2ese carb (factory) Stock mech. fuel pump The problem first rose it's ugly...

How to solve an exhuast backfire?

Rich, That is an interesting method, but unfortunately I don't own a sweet dyson vacuum like that guy. In the next day or so I will take the truck to a shop with a smoke machine and see what happens. I will post back as soon as I get some results.

How to solve an exhuast backfire?

Sorry for lack of updates, but I have been busy of late. Yesterday, I took the truck to get a VA inspection, because well I had to. Confirming my suspicions the shop failed me for an exhaust leak. However, they were not sure either as to were it was leaking. The best I could get out of them...

How to solve an exhuast backfire?

Ok so ran a few tests, and checked a few things out. The readings for the vacuum test I preformed with a warm engine: At idle the motor read just between 16.5 & 17 psi. There was a slight vibration in the vacuum gauge at idle, and by slight I mean .3 of psi +/- in either direction...
