Forgive me for another no start thread but I have a weird issue. So a while ago a battery went dead in my 1987 k10 (350 tbi). I went and got a new battery but it would not start. One day I went out, tightened the battery connectors, and it started up like nothing had happened. It was running fine until I recently disconnected the battery to work on the truck. When I reconnected it again, it wouldn't start. It cranks over fine and sputters every now and then. It ran for a second and sounded like a dying cow. It fires the most when I have the pedal floored. The smoke is very white. What could be wrong? I have wire brushed all the ground connections and everything around the battery.

I'd be looking at the battery cables and connections again...

Since it’s an 87, did you pull any codes?

checking for codes is a good idea. it could be bad timing and the ICM went out at an inopportune time.

Did you try starter fluid? It could be a weak fuel pump, bad ground on injector, or injector pulse bad.

ECM will prevent starting if it does not sense a pressure signal from the OPSU (in later TBI applications) - chewed, burned/damaged harness or tired OPSU; might be the case here.

We had similar issues with my sons truck 87 350 tbi, all of his issues were corrected when I replaced his starter connections and fusible links on the starter. We went through the same issues cleaning the battery cables would make it work for a while, then out of no where it would not respond when key was turned, some times it would just decide to magically start working again. He had lose terminal posts on his starter that I noticed when replacing his connections, so I changed the starter also while I had everything apart. No more issues after the repair.
