My name is Jay and I can't shake an old Square body addiction. I entered into this era of trucks while servicing government vehicles as a vehicle body journeyman in the Air Force starting in 2000 and ending when they updated the fleet at the various duty stations I've served at. I remember gawking at M1008-M1009s in Iraq still in service all the way until 2008 on active duty and while I was in Afghanistan in 2010. These in my opinion are the last real GM trucks. They are tough and very dependable.
I bought my personal first square body in 2006, it was an 81 shortbed stepside custom deluxe farm truck with a 250 inline 6, 3 speed column shift, and manual everything with no A/C. I kept it for awhile until I found my 81 K5 2WD Blazer after returning from Balad AB, Iraq in 2008. It was a fully loaded truck with the silverado package and a terrible body lift on it. My current square body actually happened by accident, while driving my neighborhood, I saw a guy messing around under the hood of an old suburban. I was going to help him until I saw the for sale sign. I said how much and what's wrong with it. He mentioned reverse was out and the battery was dead. Looking at the exterior, I expected a ratty interior and odd smells, this thing literally is a time capsule!! I grabbed a battery from my Chevelle and headed back. After hooking it up he fired it up and I didn't see and smoke or other things so we settled on a price then drove it home. It's an 88 Suburban with the silverado package, it has the third row option and I just picked up a rear seat today.. It is a half ton 2wd and will be a great parts hauler soon after swapping in a new 700r4 soon. Enough typing, here's a few pics of the former and current rides.
