Well my brother in law got a new company truck and is looking at selling his current one. It’s a 2016 crew cab Silverado 1500, Z71 4x4. Not sure of the trim but it has leather, Bluetooth, most of the gadgets and widgets available for the time. 165k, had a new transmission installed at 100k and an ac overhaul around 125k. I’m thinking about selling my Titan and buying this truck. Anything to look out for on these trucks? I know the transmission is an issue, and lifters can be problematic. From my research, the ac can also have issues but both of those have been resolved here. He bought it new and it’s just been a daily driver, no heavy hauling or towing and no crazy driving. Overall it’s in acceptable condition, couple of typical dings and scratches here and there. My truck is about the same, close to the same mileage, but titans and parts are rare where silverados and their parts are everywhere. Let me know if yall have any experience to share. I believe his truck has the 5.3 and 6 speed transmission.

I think you’ve nailed most of it. The 6 speed gets confused on when and where to shift, but I believe that’s mostly a programming issue. Maybe a tuner could remedy that.

The DOD stuff can be an issue.

Also, I think that version of the 5.3 is still MPFI rather than direct injection, which is a good thing.

Tuning the trans will help most things. The converter is the major issue, but can be made to last much longer if you tune out the continuous slippage and let it lock sooner. A billet front converter combined with the tuning completely solves the transmission weaknesses. Engine issues are pretty much completely DOD related. You can mitigate most of that by running good quality oil and changing it regularly.

I had a 2019 LD z71, which is essentially a 2018. The direct injection scared me the most.

The sheet metal is also pretty lightweight. I grabbed the bed rail cap and shook the truck side to side for the dealer because I had some sounds that I thought were more than the sound of the SF rear end’s normal play against the retainers. In doing so, I bent the body metal slightly just below the cap.

I had the opportunity in 2020 to sell it for more that I paid for it new, so I jumped. I did like the overall mannerisms of the truck though.

If you like the truck and don't mind taking care of the repairs that will come, I'd say go for it since it's a 6-speed truck. It'll need lifters at some point but that's really the only big thing. If it were an 8-speed truck, I'd say hard pass. All my buddies that have bought 8-speed trucks rue the day they bought those POS's

Thanks for the input. I like the truck overall, but I haven’t looked at it closely or driven it yet. I like the idea of getting back into a Chevrolet, but the Nissan hasn’t given me a reason to hate it. I also have to look at prices. Around here, Nissans don’t bring much compared to ford and Chevrolet. I have to get enough out of my truck to justify buying his so that may be a deal breaker. I could also just throw a few hundred bucks at mine to add a Bluetooth radio and call it good. Another consideration is that mine has fairly new tires, and I’m pretty sure his needs tires soon.

I'll agree with about everything said above. I daily drove my '15 for most of the 9 years I've had it. Bought it at 30k, and have just over 150k on it now. I purchased a catch can right away, and had a programmer for it at 36k. Got rid of DOD, and got rid of the torque management for the transmission. I also had to replace the A/C condenser 3 years ago. It was the typical issue where one of the lines was weak, and sprung a leak. Pretty cheap and easy to replace, just rent the A/C vacuum from the auto parts store, and you're good to go in a short afternoon.
The only other problem I've had is that my touch screen is almost useless on the radio, on the bottom half. It's supposed to be an easy / cheap fix, if you have a heat gun, and are willing to replace the screen cover yourself. I just haven't done it yet. Otherwise, I've loved every mile of my truck. I know, mine is a '15, but it's basically the same truck as you asked about, with a different grille / hood / front bumper.

The rest of the responses are pretty spot on.
I had a 2016 5.3 6speed from new. Trans lasted 60k (it was not right from day 1 but dealer couldn’t replicate) company truck and I beat it pretty hard towing a bunch. We had a bunch I think mine was the only early trans failure but I was the only manager hooking 10-14klbs to it over the passes.
Overall liked the truck.
