    GMC vs. CHEVROLET

BearKing, I'll take that cast iron 6.2l block and every one like it you can find... 6.0L is the largest cast iron production block, all 6.2's are aluminum as are 7.0's. A 6.2L iron block would be the preferred starting point for all these guys adding turbos.

    BB heads

^ yep, that would probably be the one. Can't do much port work and practically no mods to the vane in the chamber. Folks have completely removed the swirl ramp in the intake port with minimal results. They're 100cc, typically. I have a couple of sets of semi-closed chamber heads removed from...

Best all-around solvent for engine work?

Tractor Supply has some good stuff, I use it in my parts washer

Rods correctly oriented? Beveled side of the big end always goes away from the other rod, flat sides go together.

    Towing heavy with my C30

It's not an assumption but a cold hard fact that the world filled with ********* with zero common sense. Many will try anything and as long as it kinda works, they'll call it a success. Farmtruck and AZN are lucky enough to have folks around to keep safety in mind, plus they're filmed on most...

    Towing heavy with my C30

Knocking Diesel, I have the same problem. I go to check out the latest "bargain" or "rare find". Just like a lost pup, the damned things continue to follow me home. If not me, then who?

    Towing heavy with my C30

^ that assumption could cost lives but I guess assumptions have to be made. I won't pull anything I can't stop WITHOUT trailer brakes since more don't work than do. There are plenty of clutch-butts out there that have no clue about trailers and pulling stuff...borrowed truck and trailer to...

Best oil? Type, brand, viscosity, additives, etc.

I use a 50/50 blend. And like Curt, I use Lucas products. The notion that synthetics are "too slick" has been disproven many times. Today's oils, even conventional, are light years ahead of 30 - 40 years ago. Most have very good additive packages and will be fine. Just make sure to change it...

    Yet Another Powerless Truck Question

I recently spent about $50 for a battery testing device. It tests voltage, CCA and charging system. I got tired of letting the battery store guy or O'Reilly's check 'em for me. A regular multimeter can't test CCA, that puts a big load on the battery that a multimeter can't. I can't test 'em...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

The "swedging tool" I referred to previously IS a tailpipe expander, get one cheap from Hazard Fraught. Or, carefully measure the ends of the two pipes that you need to join and take your straight pipe to a muffler shop and have them swedge each end so it'll fit. Tell 'em a piece of the...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

If you don't want to use band clamps, you can buy a swedging tool from Hazard Fraught so they'll fit together and you can use conventional muffler clamps. I've used the band clamps a few times with no problem. Just make sure they're on straight pieces of pipe, no bueno on curves.

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

I guess those of us in the wide open areas with no emissions testing take that for granted. I don't remember when the last time was that a tech even looked under one of my vehicles during the inspection process. Horn, lights, brakes are what they're most concerned about.

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

They don't hurt engine performance one bit and actually make exhaust cleaner. Leave it alone. I'm not a tree hugger, but since they actually perform a function and do not cost power, why not? The "screw the environment" group is just as obnoxious and misdirected as the "save the environment at...

How important are orginal heads on a numbers matching engine?

And you should be aware that if you decide to use the vortecs, they have no heat crossover, poor manners until the engine gets warmed up a bit. Didn't have to worry about this with fuel injection.

    Dually Wheel Fitment Help

Have you checked into a simple hub swap? Axle tubes are all the same length, it's the hubs that make the difference. Check out the 14-bolt Bible at the Pirate offroad website, they have a ton of info on 'em.

Is there such thing as upgrading your starter and should i do it?

Just be careful it hasn't been dropped or whacked hard, the ceramic magnets in the newer high torque starters can't take it. Back in the day when a big old starter froze up, we slid under the truck and knocked hell out of it to get it moving. It worked more times than not. Do the same with one...

How important are orginal heads on a numbers matching engine?

It's not a Corvette, Chevelle, Charger, Mustang, etc. whose buyers will pay considerably more for a car with 100% original parts. Chevy stamped the deck of the block and transmission with the last 6 digits of the VIN. No other parts have any indicators on them that say they belong to any...

    '12 bed on a '81

Here now, let's not step on toes! I have an '86 patina dually that's getting a pump gas 565. I'm tired of diesels just walkin' off and leaving me towing with my 454. I don't just use my big inch engine to go a few miles per hour over the speed limit. I use it to get there quicker.

    '12 bed on a '81

I don't understand ANY driver or street truck that's jacked up so high that there's room for another tire and wheel in the gap. But I also don't understand "laying frame"...makes about as much sense to me.

Looking at 92 Yukon for my son

Make sure your son gives it a Spanish name, all tailgate/hatch Tahoes and Blazers were hecho en Mexico. My 3 are Julio, Juan and Pedro. Hatch should pop out only slightly when the button is pushed but there aren't any springs - I'm wondering if weatherstrip provides the push???

    Caged Nuts For Cab Mount

How are you going to measure actual torque when the rubber mount is squishing? All you'll be able to measure is the resistance of the rusty nut. Torque specs are related to fastener stretch, ain't gonna happen with rubber bushings in the mix. As tight as you can get them with a typical 1/2"...

    Dually Wheel Fitment Help

Most of the guys I know that stepped up to 22.5's use the diff from a cab & chassis, it's the narrowest one. You might look into switching hubs...I sold a diff from a C&C a few years back for $750 to a guy looking to build a lowered dually, the guy drove 300 miles to get it! I also have an '85...

Looking at 92 Yukon for my son

    Seat Hump Patch Panel?

Over half of these spent lives on farms, worked hard. We are super dry with no salt or anything similar no roads, ever - only sand. This area is known for having plenty of clean, rust-free trucks available I see several on the road every day. Squares are losing popularity here as us old farts...
