    Performance 700r4 rebuild

Sonnax input drum with 8 .067 BW high energy frictions, .095 lindered steels Yeah, I was going to do a refresh initially, but I decided to go all in on this one.

    Performance 700r4 rebuild

It had the usual 3/4 slip. So I thought being a performance trans, I'll just tear it down, clean it up, slap new frictions and steels in it, and send it. Probably got some trick parts in it, being a $4K racing trans, right?

    Performance 700r4 rebuild

Time to rebuild a "performance" 700r4. It's a Hughes Performance 74-1 as best as I can tell.

700r4 speedo port not spinning at all.

It can be either. Install an electric VSS if you want to go that route, or you can remove the reluctor, install a mechanical drive gear and driven gear, and run a mechanical speedometer.

700r4 speedo port not spinning at all.

Thats a reluctor for an electronic VSS. You need to replace that with a mechanical speedo drive gear. Look at the grey gear: You will also need the metal clip that holds the mechanical drive gear in place.

    700R4 Information Thread

Ugh. I've been going back and forth on whether or not to use an early valve body with mechanical lockup or make my own TCC lockup control for the 89 700r4 I'm about to build. It's going into a 600+ hp big block Camaro. Mainly street driven, with an occasional trip to the strip. I'm not really...

Not advisable, 10-4 My other trucks have 6l80s, so ill just keep the slide and rotor for the 700. Not 100% sure what year the 700 with the bad pump is. It's buried under some camaro parts at the moment. Thanks Nick!

    700R4 Information Thread

Picked up a 2003 4l65e for parts. One of the transmissions I'm going to build is a first gen 700. I have the 716 drum from the 65e, and I want to press out the 300mm input shaft, and install the 298mm input shaft from the 700. Will the pump from the 65e work with this input shaft, or do I need...

    TH350 To a 700r4 transmission

I've watched a couple of your youtube videos. They are top notch. Have you been through a Hughes transmission? I have a 74-1 that I'm going to rebuild. I think I'm going to be sad when I open it up and find a stock input drum and 4 pinion planetaries.

New question - 5 pinion planetaries, is the juice worth the squeeze? Gathering parts for a 700r4 that will go behind a 454 in my C20. Mild build, probably 500 ft/lbs at the crank. Strictly street driven. Pros - I think the torrington bearing vs flat washer is big step forward for reliability...

Etch primer and sun baked 'surface rust'

Skip the etching primer. Clean up the rust best you can, then treat it with Ospho. You can get a gallon of Ospho at most hardware stores for around $30.00. Ospho pickles clean steel, converts rust, and it does a really good job. After that, seal it up with an epoxy primer, then a sandable primer.

The US military had a problem with some missile guidance systems corroding and causing failures. They cleaned the troublesome connectors with Deoxit, and the problem went away. Allegedly.
