    Axle ratio help

Partly true ----- on an open differential, the side and spider gears change the revolutions in relation to the driveshaft - so the numbers won't be anywhere near accurate. You can get in trouble with the Gov-Loc® system too because you CAN turn one axle slowly and the posi-effect won't hook up...

    Quadrajet Spacers

Q-Jets also have well-plug leaks. There is a kit --- maybe not anymore 'cause they were obsoleted a while back - but someone has them --- called "Home Plate" by Tomco that sealed the well plugs so they wouldn't leak the fuel from the float bowl. Resist the urge to use JB Weld - it is hard to...

    K5 Blazer values… possibly buying 86 k5

My orange K5 - '86 - is parked in the front of my yard and I had a guy yesterday drop in and offer me $13,000.00 for it --- and of course, it's not for sale. But here in - Montana, no-rust K5s are dearly wanted for big cash. I saw a cherry 89 K5 go for $22,000.00 a couple of months ago.

Torque Converter and Transmission Assembly Question - Help Needed

... had a little trouble with your R&R guys I see huh? ANY person installing a transmission --- well, let me say this: they are the Numero Uno reason why transmissions fail. A good R&R Guy is worth a lot of $$$.

    New 383 Stroker

I know this is zombified --- but belated congrats to you. I hope your 383 is a better version than the one I inherited --- on that assumption, I'll never own another one.

Rebuilt TBI 350 coolant in oil

I'm not picking up on the block as to: what size, is it cast iron or aluminum, what heads are on it, what was the original engine size (cubic inches) what are the current heads from (350, 5.7, 400, etc.)? I've found mystery coolant migration into the engine oil from mismatched head's on the...

after doin front end clutch and steering column, truck feels like its in 4wd

I only read a line or two from that way-huge monosentence and I got a headache ... but so far I see some responses that open a little info..... I've had the wrong master cylinder internal pushrod turn out to be too long and that keeps the brakes partially applied. I might be totally wrong here...

    Wiper Control Module

Well ..... long time ago it seems, I made this post and never closed it. FUN FACT: I know a guy who repaired me Peavey Bass Amp, and I gave him the non-smoked module I had to see if he could resurrect it. He tested everything he could ... but stopped short at the IC , which he said is...

    1999 454 carb swap. best street carb, 600? 650? 750? CFM

I have to add that to my list. 1. Never tell a guy he can't stack firewood correctly. 2. Never insult a guy's wife, no matter how fat or ugly she is. 3. Never discuss politics or religion 4. Never discuss fuel and air induction or injection.

    Passenger side axle stuck

I'm not sure you can damage a spider ... you can damage a side gear, but you are saying you didn't damage a spider ...... Spider gears have the trunnion pin going through them. Side gears have the axle splines.

    Passenger side axle stuck

I don't get it --- a 28 in a 30 spline? You'd have to be some sort of gorilla with a 30# sledge hammer to try to drive the wrong axle in but I think you'd bust the carrier first if you somehow did it anyway. . In spite of the diameter differences, there's no way you can hobb new splines on...

What could this random tube attached to the exhaust be?

Kinda like the old VW Bug heaters that took heat from around the exhaust manifolds and routed it into the cabin. Nobody died of whom I am aware of this system although it seems kinda iffy. I liked the Corvairs better --- the early ones had actual gasoline-fired furnaces in the front cargo...

    Filling small holes without welding

Once you trap two dissimilar metals under Bondo and they get the slightest amount of moisture on them, the holes will grow and you've got bigger spaces to repair. Aluminum rivets belong in aluminum --- but they have to be in the correct alloy 'cause there's a lot of very different alloys...

What locker shall I go for?

Hmmmmmmmmmm. I haven't had that as a problem yet --- maybe because I always used the throttle-blip to make sure the old Gov-Loc was "in" before I applied pressure to it; that kept it alive for over 30 years of me abusing it. I'd just put it in forward or reverse and when I needed to - or...

    1999 454 carb swap. best street carb, 600? 650? 750? CFM

Never liked Holleys -- every time the sun went behind a cloud you had to re-jet. Power valves blow out if you get a backfire and they are just a lot of maintenance. Been running Q-Jets as an old retired street racer and drags in dual-quad setups --- even the Edelbrock versions -- flawless. I...

    Filling small holes without welding

I like watching Bondo Billy --- here he's flux-core welding a gap-slot -- and it is a decent weld process. I've seen him chase rust holes in much the same way --- and they always turn out good - I still like to think he's shooting some panel wax on the inside after he completes the welding and...

What locker shall I go for?

I went with the Eaton 912A556 Detroit Truetrac 8.5" 28 Spline Differential with 10 Bolt for my '85 K5, and I also replaced the ring and pinion to match the front axle. IIRC they are 3.08:1. I like the taller gears 'cause if I need low-grunt, I've always got Low Range. We...

Gm 12 bolt gear pattern help. ?

If you move things around to get to what you THINK is the correct lash, you mess up the tooth pattern again. Stop with good pattern and let the chips fall --- it won't be bad - it's the way it's gonna be.

Gm 12 bolt gear pattern help. ?

Backlash is what's left over after the patterns are correct. There's too much emphasis on backlash - and it can be understood as it's the machining process and matching of the gears at the machining stage. Every gear-cutting machine process will produce tolerances and differences which are...

    Quadrajet Filter Spring

Most extended cranking to fill the float chamber was from the well plugs draining and they took a while to refill before you'd get the engine to run again. There were kits to prevent that well plug drainage and they worked pretty well. I just use an electric frame-mounted fuel pump as a...

    Burning hei coils

Did you check the available voltage at the power coming into the HEI coil? If you have a dropping resistor or the factory resistive primary wire in the circuit, the coil can die while it's sucking wind (low voltage) by pulling higher amps --- and that'll burn out the HEI coil quickly! Amps...
