Can you eliminate the charcoal canister from a 1983 c10 305?

I kept mine. The only thing it's connected to is the gas tank vent line. That way the gasoline vapors run through the charcoal, and then out to atmosphere. In the original configuration, it would have been drawn into engine. I like having the canister because there is never a gasoline smell...

    Are pneumatic tools obselete?

I have a Bosch 3/8" impact wrench and 3/8" drill that use the same 18v lithium ion batteries. After 10-12 years, the batteries still hold a charge for a long time. That's fantastic compared to batteries we had back in the 90s. But if I ever need to replace a battery or the charger, I could be...

    Problem solved

If you have a non-factory A/C truck, your heater core may not be wide enough for the housing. I had this problem with my 82. Check out the photo. The heater core on the left fits snugly into the housing, whereas the one on the right lets cold air bypass it. Both part numbers were listed for...

    Problem solved

By "no circulation" what do you mean -- no heat or no air flow?

    Posi Traction

3.73 gears are typically considered to be a great fit for a 700R4. Even more so with a 305 and tall tires (compared to a car).

How much for a used th350?

I think you did OK at $400. Several years ago I sold one in good shape for $600 including converter, but the guy had ridden in my car and knew it worked well. Years later I bought one in unknown condition for $150, and sunk around $200 in it for an overhaul kit and rebuilt stock converter...

    Help with block id

About the tag riveted to the block, I can't find 4444 in a casting number, so it must mean something else. And I don't know what 20.01 means. You need to find a way to read the casting number. For example, use a mirror and flashlight, or take a photo with a smart phone. Also, on some later...

What's the going price on a good 305 engine these days ?

Free to a couple hundred bucks. I got one for free several years ago. It was probably was from a Monte Carlo SS or Z28 because it had the good cylinder heads and a roller cam. Unfortunately, when I got it home and took it apart, I found a couple rusted cylinder walls, due to the seller...

Failed CO emissions-high CO and HC

Yes, especially now that they don't look goofy! I've used them on two trucks and a car since around 1998. Funny, but we lived in Colorado for 4 years in the mid-90s. I don't ever remember getting an emissions test on my 69 pickup. We must have left before all the craziness started. For...

    replacing power steering pump

I have found AC Delco reman parts to be high quality and last a long time. At least that's true for starters and alternators. I've had one of each on a 69 C10 since around 2000-2002 -- probably around 40K miles.

torque converter or flex plate question

When installing the converter on the trans, be sure to keep turning and pushing until it fully engages the pump. And it should not protrude from the transmission. Here's some text from an article I found: The torque converter must be installed and fully seated in the transmission before it can...

Failed CO emissions-high CO and HC

Wow, even New Jersey doesn't require emission tests or safety inspections for cars and trucks over 25 years old. They get special QQQ license plates, and registration needs to be renewed every 3 years. However, the state does limit driving to car shows, parades, etc. But my son drove his...

    Crewcab with an I6. Hmmmm

For nearly 10 years I used a link to the the GM Heritage Center that listed the complete 1982 Chevy truck specs -- standard and optional engines and transmissions, brake packages, etc. However, the link now "redirects" me to a new page that's nothing but advertising BS. Can't find those actual...

"... the perfect project truck to find that could become the winner at any car show!" Yeah, right. Only $8,900 pus another $20K-$30K should do it.

    SBC exhaust manifolds don't fit

Exhaust manifold spreader? Is that also known as exhaust manifold cracker? Man, that's a first for me after 50+ years of working on Chevy small blocks. I still learn something new almost every day.

    Multimeters?

I've had a Fluke 83 for over 30 years now. Also have an inexpensive imported multimeter with a current clamp for measuring AC and DC current. Lowest current range is 0-40 amps, so it's accuracy at anything below 4 amps is probably not very good. Mine's a lot like this one:

Get your Hookers while they're available!

Just now ordered a set! A really good buy, I think, because some places sell a pair of crappy Dorman stock replacements for almost that much. Summit says they're out of stock until Aug 3, so I guess we'll see if they ship then. But I'm in no rush. I like Summit because their warehouse is 50...

Best headers and can still easily change plugs?

From a post I made many years ago: All of them have pros and cons. Hookers and Hedmans tend to hang down. The Patriot H8048 headers on my 82 C10 tuck up well, but I had to re-route (bend) three hard lines on the frame because the #2 tube touched or came very close to them. Still better than...

    Compressor overload keeps tripping

All the OP needs to do is verify there is 220-250 volts across the two wires. That said, if the compressor has been working for years, the problem probably has nothing to do with the power source. Please let us know what the problem was.

    High Amp Alternator?

Before buying another alternator, check voltage at the alternator output terminal (the one with the largest wire). Do it with the engine running with hi-beams and AC on. Then check voltage at the battery. The voltages should be close to the same, a little less at the battery. The ideal number...

    700R4 nightmares

35" tires with 3.73 should work well with a TH350 or TH400, at least on the highway. RPM vs. MPH is almost exactly like a 29" tire (255-70x15) with a 3.08 axle, which has worked fine on my 69 C10 for for 30+ years. Now if you plan to do off-roading, a 3.73 and your 35" tires may not be a good...
