It appears the catalytic converter is not required on a vehicle as old as mine, or any of ours, here in VA. If deleting the cat won't mess with the driveability of the truck it is the cheapest option. (It seems like there is only one O2 sensor I have seen and it is directly below the exhaust... -

It seems damn near impossible to access all 4 bolts on this drivers side tank bracket with this gigantic oval cat where it is. Also, I understand that if the cat is clogged it could be the, or one of, the reasons for the symptoms of the engine studdering. I am trying to kill two birds with one... -

Ok I am now guessing the TBI would have trouble with no catalytic converter being in there? I was actually getting somewhat excited to have a solution to this so easily...but I have not thought about the complications of a TBI set up versus a just carbeurated set up. Ok what tool will I need to to clamp in a long straight pipe with a coupling section on each end? I am planning to rent a pipe cutting hand tool from O reilly today when I pick up my new tank and sending unit. While I'm there I am going to hopefully find a straight pipe and 2 coupling pipes. -

1)The only reason I would replace the cat is because I assume VA law would say I need to. And yes I have been looking at general replacement cats for a cut job if necessary. 2) The goal, currently, is to replace the drivers side tank. -

So I started taking the u bolts off either side of the cat. I had PB Blaster soaking on them since yesterday. While I got those free easily it seemed like it will be quite difficult to free this cat. I sprayed the next set of u bolt nuts with the Blaster to soak while I get the kids to practice... -

I have never removed a catalytic converter. My trucks cat is mid frame drivers side. It is directly after each pipe from the exhaust manifolds join to feed in to it and then after the cat the pipe Y's out to each side exit at the end of the bed. The cat is joined in between both sets of pipe by... -

My trucks sending units are somewhat visible looking in between the bed and cab. Shortbed, 16 gallons. Not exactly-directly straight down in the gap but they are definitely not under the cab. -
