First real drive! Not tragic but not good. I think I need carb advice.

Those mystery bolt holes don't seem to exist on other frames I see. Here's a pretty clean frame - that big hole is the big bolt on mine (he removed one of his tanks apparently). I wonder what they had there. I think they had a camper on this so maybe one of those brackets it ties down to. I'll...

First real drive! Not tragic but not good. I think I need carb advice.

Just to branch off another question - while inspecting the fuel lines - the left/right tank switching mechanism is higher than my current fuel level (about mid tank height but I only have about 5 gallons of gas on the right tank) - I did get a dribble of gas out of the tank (the other tank is...

Good tips. I did watch videos on that holder bolt thing - which I think I do have. Which is of course behind the hard fuel line. Before I even tried to find TDC, I unplugged the hose going into the fuel pump. It appears to be higher than my current gas level and nothing came out. Since this...

I just picked up a new pump - so I have no doubt it will be the fuel sock on the pickup! :hahano: I can't even imagine what that will take to fix - remove the bed? fun. I will ignore the lobe comment entirely.

I believe the pump is a 2 port (I don't see a third). I'm not sure if it's worth fixing (or fixable) or just replacing - the price range on the parts seem pretty huge. ($30-$200). I got a new air cleaner just because the stock one looks a little beat and the filter, while clean, is old and...

According to a random calculator I found online (that I'm probably using wrong), a 3/8 hose at 4psi between 3-6 feet in length would fill about 2.5 gallons per min. Does that sound right? That sounds like a LOT of fuel.

No :hahano: The lid of a small water bottle - like the little thimble amount of fuel. I'm seeing it should generally be 4-6psi but I'm not sure what that looks like in "flow."

Update (not that anyone was asking)... Fuel seems to be the problem. I removed the fuel line going into the carb (still the quad, also the line was bone dry) and put the line into an empty clear bottle I could see while I was turning it over. Nothing came out. I couldn't imagine I was out of...

OK - so as usual, nothing goes as planned. I managed to get to all the plugs, which was insanely difficult and even more difficult to screw in the compression gauge. They all read about 135. Does that sound right? One read a little lower but I simply couldn't tighten the gauge properly so I'm...

So if I have a non-mod quad - is that a bad thing? OK - while looking around for black Friday deals I found an auto part store near me that is going out of business (all sales final) but they had really good prices on a bunch of new stuff. I ended up getting an Edelbrock AVS2 650, air cleaner...

Not good at ac I need help

I haven't even attempted to get my AC working yet. All the controls are frozen. BUT, I'm curious as a last resort if I went this route - does it work with the standard GM controls or does it have a new controller?

Doing a little research on this model number I found...that's either not the model number or this carb didn't come on this truck, or I found bad intel. This code would mean it was made in 1977 (truck is 1974) and this is a Varijet for a manual transmission.

Just keeping this effort alive. Despite a 4 day weekend - I only had about 3 hours to finally work on the truck. I started checking compression and replacing plugs in cylinders 1-4 but ran out of light. The headers that are on there completely cover cylinder 6, 7 & 8. I think I can reach 7 & 8...

So that one you marked in blue must be that second line coming from the air-cleaner.

well I also took this one but there wasn't anything interesting on this side.

OK - I finally took off the air cleaner housing - which was way easier than I was expecting. With it off I did find an idle hose that I think came off that diaphragm so I put that back on. It didn't seem to change anything. I fiddled with the moving parts a little to see if they're moving...

OK - here's some pics of what I'm working with. I do see a little diaphragm looking thing off the distributor with nothing connected so that's probably wrong. I'll see what I can find in the PDF service manuals but it seems like you guys will spot things I wouldn't even think of. First pic -...

Yeah - there is a hose coming from the carb that isn't going anywhere. I thought it was from the line on the intake that has the heat hose from the header (which I don't have) but I think it may go to the carb. I'll need to remove the air cleaner to follow it. I'll have to do that tomorrow.

In reading about how to tune the quadrajet - I saw this same comment. I have a vacuum hose hanging on my passenger floor...Any idea where this goes? I assume it's part of the AC. Is that the same vacuum?

Great tips. While I really like the idea of buying a new thing that will just make everything better...nothing works that way. I guess I need to buy some tools (compression test & timing light). The sparkplugs and wires are another challenge. The only thing the previous owner did "upgrade" was...

So I've been checking off items to make this thing drivable and nothing's been easy. Lights; I had no lights and no single problem. A few cut wires, a few chewed wires, a few bad bulbs and a few bad connectors and even some bad bulb sockets. I know have full lights (outside) blinkers, brakes...

US Mag wheels lug nut suggestions

Got the wheels on finally - My poor truck needs so much work...I'll make a new thread about that. I'm happy with the wheels except it makes the rest of my truck look really bad. Also I will probably be switching out the 2" lift for a 4" because it will give me a little more clearance to put...

NEW Brothers Dash Bezels - CHEAP

Oh man those are good prices. I don't think they'll work on mine. I need 74 with AC. My wiper knob has another little opening above the wiper spot. I've been trying to restore mine without harming the chrome under the black paint. I'm prepared to just paint strip it at this point.

US Mag wheels lug nut suggestions

The price I found was the same everywhere - $333 each. Summit had free shipping which was about as good as it gets. They arrived super fast (ordered on Saturday, arrived on Monday). Discount Tire (same price) couldn't get this size for some reason. I got the tires at Costco which is free...
