Differential swap / bought it, work and install now

Rob, considering unlike most of us, you have car lifts at your disposal, and you’re not hauling tons of turkle feed around like you were, I’d consider slapping the axle in as-is and send it! Less $ upfront and ease of gear swap later since you can just throw the truck on a lift when it comes time.

Differential swap / bought it, work and install now

Like you said, present company excluded (the gear heads here in this thread), many do t understand the difference between towing across Kansas with a head wind or tail wind vs towing in the mountains. And we don’t even have the elevation factor here. Take your same rig and add another mile in...

Differential swap / bought it, work and install now

You’re correct. Don’t tow in OD is just part of a towing for dummies tutuorial. Or more accurately the “safe” way to go when explaining towing to someone who is mechanically challenged or doesn’t speak car. Speaking of towing and OD….i cannot wait to go test drive the new Chummins with the 8...

    Wheel Setup On lowered truck

No good pics but buddy has done a couple 72 ish trucks. 3/5 range drop, no channeling or front tubs. Sitting on 18s looks great. Definitely a good balance between OE look and big wheels. I went 20s but haven’t lowered yet. I like that look but it’s subjective. IMO 20s don’t result in rubber band...

    Gas in Oil!?

My experience with Edelbrock carbs is a bit different. I’m not a carb genius nor have brand loyalty but have 2 Eddy carbs on squares coincidentally. 1 is idk probably 15 years old at least. Other is only a few years old. Both trucks start very quick sometimes instantly when cold but driven...

What have you done to your square lately??

Holy fuuck. Now $7.75 is a screaming low deal but even normal price plus exchange rate that’s expensive. Nevermind the 40-50% haircut on your paycheck if you make any sort of decent money. Good friend living in Victoria BC (I know it’s like the Seattle of Canada for cost of living), frugal guy...

What have you done to your square lately??

Try some silicone lube on the felt first to see how much it improves. Make sure you’re lubing the felt inside the door. The exposed portion in the window opening doesn’t really engage much until the window is almost completely closed. As I’ve never taken one apart until recently (and re used...

    3 minute battery life…?

FWIW, his battery is likely a combo marine/ deep cycle/starting battery. Very few traditional deep cycle only lead acid batteries out there. But again, if this battery cranked it fine last time, it’s not the marine designation that is the issue. if it is a true deep cycle it may be part of the...

    3 minute battery life…?

Voltage drop under load, specifically. Resting voltage drop is in my experience not affected by internally corroded cables. Only when drawing current.

    3 minute battery life…?

I’d try the old battery in the newer car first or have it load tested after charging. Much greater possibility the old truck with electrical problems could hurt the newer battery. Or just crank it momentarily. It will either spin over like normal or not. Don’t keep cranking if ist the same.

Lookin for a replacement style mirror

So being a dually it had one of 2 original style towing mirrors probably the smaller frame mount ones like the brown truck above. But the mounts on the top of the door mean someone put Cali mirrors or semi truck mirrors on it. (Whatever they’re called.) Not OE. That one door looks thrashed, so...

Sorry, re-read first post. Truck started fine a year ago? Or not? You did a tune up then or now? On a running engine or not?

    3 minute battery life…?

Didn’t you just post about the fusible link too? Are the battery cables from 1985? If so, replace. Also presume new starter spun it over no problem …. Years ago. Did it run then? Possible causes: starter is drawing too many amps, engine is half seized or way off timing etc causing starter to...

    87 tbi zero power

Good news is it doesn’t seem to be a nagging intermittent short. I’d say battery to starter or starter to junction block (I think that’s how it runs).

    Good rear gears

True story. And they also drove model Ts and Conestoga wagons cross country. None as comfortable as a squarebody. And a square screaming at 4k rpm’s all day pulling down negative 6 mpg is nowhere near as nice as having an OD gear or 2 to choose from to keep the ponies running slower. But agree...

Twitchy steering with a big travel trailer (rear sway bar help?)

I’ll admit Ive never used a weight safe hitch with the gauge on it. So I have no idea how it would calculate what you’re seeing. Although 3klbs sounds ridiculously high. Whatever that number means. Your being lowered does not appreciably change the spring rate. And 50psi in a set of typical...

Twitchy steering with a big travel trailer (rear sway bar help?)

I think I’m being convinced that you don’t have experience towing or understand the principles very well. Not a big deal other than it could be as much or more of a factor than your vehicle. I also think answering all the questions asked from those trying to help you with your problem is very...

    Questions about... My rear end?

Both will require shock mount and spring mounts I believe. Assuming both are known good axles. And Chevy didn’t make 14bolts in 1968 afaik. Bigger questions are gearing and how your gonna match the front axle so you don’t have an average of a 7 lug truck.

Twitchy steering with a big travel trailer (rear sway bar help?)

Tires with too much flex certainly would allow the tail to wag the dog more. You’re correct. I’m just not seeing it in this scenario. Not that it’s not possible or contributing. But the OP did not complain of the trailer swaying/wiggling. Plus he’s using a wdh with sway control. Should track...

Twitchy steering with a big travel trailer (rear sway bar help?)

The speculation in this thread has turned into a bit of a mess. I’d say do this. 1. Front end alignment. Specifically caster. 2. Figure out your actual rear axle weight loaded. Then you can confirm or deny tire load rating. And you can test higher pressures for a practical verification...

That’s cool! Also I was replying to @AuroraGirl post about her truck and tire issues or whatever.

Twitchy steering with a big travel trailer (rear sway bar help?)

Possibly. Although I’m not seeing 5klbs on the rear axle without the OP explaining why he’s using airbags to that extent or at all. Nor am I seeing it possible to have anywhere near enough weight in the rear axle especially if the wdh is pulling any weight off. Those bags at 60psi will jack the...
