Adding keyless entry/alarm to factory power lock questions.

After doing some probing I have found that the black wire with a white stripe going behind the driver side kick panel and into the door unlocks the doors, and the light blue wire in the same place locks it. They only get hot for an about a second or less when the switch is applied in the...

Adding keyless entry/alarm to factory power lock questions.

I have a Viper 3100 kit on my 85 C10 Silverado with factory power locks and noticed the instructions call for a negative input and output to operate the door locks and to purchase an additional relay if the circuit is positive. Is the factory system already a negative feed? If so what wires do...

    Craziest antitheft idea yet.

Many manual transmission Ford Super Duty and other easy-theft truck owners wish you were right. Anyone mechanically competent enough to start a vehicle without a key is not going to be deterred by a third pedal. Though, for the run of the mill ghetto goblin trying to jack idling cars at red...

Bought an '87 long bed on Bring a Trailer a few days ago

Absolutely beautiful. A manual Silverado trim trim is uncommon, any square in that condition is very uncommon.

    Diagnose 1st Replace parts second

The internet is a curse and a blessing for mechanic advice. For example, anytime a Q jet related question arises, some will respond in a helpful manner, but many self-proclaimed "geniuses" will tell you to throw it in the trash and a get a Holley because they refuse to believe a Q jet is a...

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

A common recurring theme I have noticed, is that the 305 SBC and 6.2 Detroit seem to be hated, even though general consensus deems them both reliable options. Assuming you are given a choice between two trucks that are identical in every regard except for the engine (One has a 6.2 Detroit and...

    Which Mirrors are BEST quality?

It is possible that they have been listed as chrome, even though they may actually be stainless. Chromed plastic and polished stainless look nearly the same at quick glance.

    M1009 Engine Swap ID

If thats the original engine in that truck, its a 6.2 Detroit diesel (Not to be confused with the 5.7 Oldsmobile diesel). If its has been swapped with a gas engine or a different diesel, someone here can probably tell you what it is, if we get a picture of the whole engine bay.

    Headlights quit working

In the case of pre-1984 squares, I have found a faulty floor-mounted high/low beam switch to often be the cause of sudden headlight failure or inconsistently functioning headlights. If it is not that, it is either going to be ground issue, or a continuity issue.

    Which Mirrors are BEST quality?

OEM take offs are arguably the best, even if you have to do a little bit of refurbishing to them. If you cant find clean ones, the new stainless ones are good too. The good thing about this style of mirror is that rights and lefts are the exact same.

    SPID Placement in glove box

My '84 has it on the driver side wheel well. Unfortunately many SPIDs get peeled off, along with every other decal under the hood. I am yet to encounter an intact glovebox SPID on a square.

I finally realized why I like working on my '81 C10 so much

Enhanced Aftermarket wiper systems exist, though they seem to be set up for the dash mounted pre-84 wiper switch. You can put them on the post '84 trucks too, but you will end up with two wiper switches in two different places. With that said, the OE system has worked good enough for me so far.

I finally realized why I like working on my '81 C10 so much

Squares are actually pretty advanced for what they are. They had HEI, ESC, and even TBI in the later years. The earlier 67-72 trucks have them beat in the "simplicity" department. With that said, the fact the square has several modern creature comforts and technologies and is still simple to...

    GMT 400 W/T

It is hard to go wrong with a gmt400, even the worst ones are still often good trucks in their own right. a short bed 4x4 WT is not too common in my experience. Most I see are typically long bed 2wds. It sounds like you got a good starting point for a 4x4 build and maybe even a future daily.

Round eye (73-80) grille/radiator on slope nose front clip (81+)

I saw this interesting truck posted on the squarebody Japan page. At first I thought it was photoshop, but it appears the owner somehow grafted a round eye front hood edge onto to a slope nose hood and made the round eye radiator support mount between the slope nose fenders. Obviously Front clip...

    Ac conversation with factory AC

As long as there is enough vacuum to run the blend doors, I don't see why you couldn't. Worst case scenario, you will have to set up a 12 volt vacuum pump to run the trucks vacuum actuated features. There were a lot of diesel trucks set up this way from the factory, before the industry started...

    Ac conversation with factory AC

Later r4s made for GMT400 trucks are actually optimized for r134 (as much as an R4 can be, anyway.) I personally prefer to just modify lines to work with a modern compressor rather than make an R4 work though. Either route works in the end though.

2004 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 rattle noise from behind dash on driver's side.

Mine would randomly stop working entirely at random times. It seemed to kid more reliable after I changed the blend door actuator, though that was not done in response to the random shutoff problem. I honestly have no idea if there is any correlation, since the blend door worked fine during the...

    Ac conversation with factory AC

You will need to rig up refrigerant lines that work with the ac compressor on the LS, route vacuum lines for the blend doors and the control switch. you will also need need AC vent dash trim, and a instrument bezel for a 73-80, unless you want to use the entire dash pad assembly and Instrument...

2004 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 rattle noise from behind dash on driver's side.

I'm not entirely sure what I am looking for, but if you see anything that looks like a potential rattle point, maybe I can look for it on mine. Seeing that your HVAC is acting up scares me, because I just got mine to start acting right.

2004 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 rattle noise from behind dash on driver's side.

Mine has the standard speaker setup with the non-speaker pillars. The fuse panel seems secured. The parking brake linkage could be a possible suspect.

    Floor center hump

Earlier squares actually have a bolt-on transmission hump, later ones like yours are just part of the floor stamping. You can cut yours out and and either fabricate another hump or install one from a factory high hump truck. Also, if you intend to use that same frame for the 4x4 conversion, you...

2004 Silverado 2500HD 4x4 rattle noise from behind dash on driver's side.

On my '04 Silverado 2500 I keep hearing a rattle noise at random intervals. The steering shaft and column bushing is new and still tight. I also changed out the brake pedal pivot bushing, since I thought that it could be causing the noise, but that did not stop the noise either. I cannot not...

$40 well spent on OEM buzzer

I think AMC, Mopar, and GM all had the same buzzer at one point. If not, they sure sound similar. I also remember some squares a constant Hi-pitched non-stop beep. My '85 Suburban made the beep when the headlights were left or the key was left in. My '85 C10 Silverado makes the buzzer noise...

Factory Seats; Why do they suck?

The closest to perfect bucket seats I have sat in is the OEM GMT-800 front seats. The factory Jeep CJ7 and YJ seats are surprisingly comfortable too, its just too bad they're bolted in a vehicle that beats the crap out of you. As for square seats, The bucket seats in higher trim Suburbans and...
