    Odometer Rolled Over?

If the cab mount and rad support bushings are cracked and clapped out it's over 100k. If the are nice and smooth and look good it is probably low mileage. gauge cluster could have been changed at some time as well.

    transmission oil change

Be sure to torque the pan carefully and evenly. 11ft/lb on my TH350 yours may be different

Your opinion on seldom driven GMC V20

Poor performance slowly coming on can possibly be a worn cam or timing chain. Happened to me. I don't know if you have a roller engine but the chain could be the problem.

    85 305 in a k1500 - wont idle after smog removal

All of this info makes my head hurt. My '81 350 has a vac line to the dizzy and a pcv line to the valve cover with a quadrajet. Been running flawlessly since i put it together 3 years ago. no power brakes and no choke. bare bones

Newb Alert: What is this diesel filter on firewall?

Mine is an '83, 67k miles, came with a shop manual.

Newb Alert: What is this diesel filter on firewall?

The water in fuel detector is in the tank according to the shop manual.

Swaping engine internals opinions, and does this look bad to you?

numbers matching in squares is not a value thing. find a good running small block and keep the 305 in the garage for a future owner or better financial times.

    K10 downsizing from 454 to 305 roller

305 will not have enough grunt for a 4x4. IMHO.I don't care if they came that way new. You need low rpm torque to get away from the stoplight. 350,383,400 or big block.

Newb Alert: What is this diesel filter on firewall?

There should be a valve near the tank and spring hanger that is designed to siphon water out of the bottom of the tank when the sensor detects enough water. My '83 k10 has that valve easily seen in front of the rear wheel.

Am I crazy to expect more than 10 MPG

"81 short step, 360(.60 over) 700r4, q jet rv cam hedders, 21/2" duals and 3:90 gears. 10 MPG all day long. LETS GO BRANDON

    new member with a 78 c20

A 2" shackle and a 2" front leaf spring perch combined with 2" coils up front will level out the truck and leave you with some load carrying capacity as well. I have this combo on my '81 c10. The shackle may or may not contact the bed. I added Timbrin overload bumpers on the rear to limit travel...

To 6.2, or not to 6.2

Sounds like a lot of work and money to me. i would find a used engine for around $800 and use the money saved for gas. Or buy a corolla like mentioned earlier.

    Hubs not unlocking

Might be time to disassemble, clean, lube and reassemble the hubs. Grease mixed with dirt makes mud that is not very slippery.

1979 GMC Heavy Half - One Owner

IMHO a 2-4 drop would be cheaper and still use the truck as it was intended. The lower you go the more issues you will have, but that's just me

Please help me make a decision

I would have the driveline inspected. Change the full time 4x4 and maybe regear it. you didn't mention the ratio but it's probably around 4 give or take. those 400sbc engines were built for ratios in the high 2's. 10mpg would be a best case scenario with those changes. An overdrive tranny is not...

    Insulation on a Budget

Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, or as my father used to say, " if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right". I suggest using the correct materials for the job.

    Time for a Radiator Upgrade...?

sounds like your engine is very sensitive to temp. i was mostly trying to help the original post because i have a similar setup that work for me. i would start with a new rad and the stat of his choice and i think he will be fine.

    Time for a Radiator Upgrade...?

sorry for the technical snafoo, i'm not computer savvy. flat top pistons, RV style cam, aluminum intake, quadrajet, hedders, 2 1/2 " exhaust. running 170 deg. oil is clean at 3,000 mi. and have'nt even looked at the plugs since install (25k). no emissions. essentially no issues with running at...

    Time for a Radiator Upgrade...?

.60 over 350. running this combo for 21/2 years now. I didn't put the 160 in for the trans specifically. one of the best running small blocks i've ever had. Tell me why you think this is too cold even though i have no intention of changing it.

To Cut Or Not To Cut

Seems to me that you are trying to put something round into something that was meant to be square. I don't see the advantage but that's just me.

    Time for a Radiator Upgrade...?

I bought an aluminum rad from Rock auto for my '81 c10 360/700r4. was amazed by the low price. i run a 160 stat and the truck never wavers off of 170 degrees. Gotta believe that cooler temp is good for the trans. I'd shelve that rad and replace it, less than $150 if i remember correctly

    1977 c10 worth one owner 63k miles

just for reference, i recently bought an '83 k10 short fleet diesel, running, driving, new tires, shocks, trans rebuilt, springs, brakes, seat not damaged with rusty wheel wells and rockers. 67k miles for $5,ooo. did i mention it has a working Meyer power angle plow?!. i personally think that 2wd...
