    I think your engine only needs valve cover gaskets and possibly valve seals. I would not remove the heads until i changed those two items.

    Save yourself a lot of time and money and find a 400sbc and rebuild it. Flat top pistons if you want, rv cam, quadrajet, long tube hedders, stock heads and make sure you use a big block rad. Gear it around 330 to 370 . You will be amazed at the torque these engines make. No need to change...

    I would look for a good running used 350, maybe even buy a rusted out running truck or car and swap the engine. Machine shop turn around times are crazy and rebuild parts can be questionable. you can always sell or scrap the carcass.

    '83 k5 short fleet with 67k was a small airport truck in jamestown NY. rebuilt trans, new tires, good brakes, shocks,exhaust and suspension and a Meyer power angle plow in working condition for $5k. used it all winter with no repairs or problems. I doubled my money regardless of your dim view...

    If the cab mount and rad support bushings are cracked and clapped out it's over 100k. If the are nice and smooth and look good it is probably low mileage. gauge cluster could have been changed at some time as well.

    Poor performance slowly coming on can possibly be a worn cam or timing chain. Happened to me. I don't know if you have a roller engine but the chain could be the problem.

    All of this info makes my head hurt. My '81 350 has a vac line to the dizzy and a pcv line to the valve cover with a quadrajet. Been running flawlessly since i put it together 3 years ago. no power brakes and no choke. bare bones

    numbers matching in squares is not a value thing. find a good running small block and keep the 305 in the garage for a future owner or better financial times.
