    BBC 489 build

The oil pan has some nice hardware, and is double bolted, so bolts cannot loosen. I think this is a pretty engine, but pretty is what pretty does. Spring has sprung so very busy with the ranch, but determined to check the valve clearance this week, and will show how I do it. That will allow me...

Took oil pump apart, and dim. look good @ .0015, and also applied breakin lube to shaft. BTW The breakin lube is oil dissolvable, and mixes with the oil, and will drain out with the first oil change. The clay was about .300 thick, this is the clearance between the bottom of the pan and the...

    489ci tow build...

here is my 489 build, not budget, but middle of the road. https://www.gmsquarebody.com/threads/bbc-489-build.45389/ For what you want to do, cam, Elderbrock air gap, these headers have been great, fit and never leaked. This cam is a inexpensive choice, 114 lobe separation, slight amount of...

Finally received my exchange timing chain, this time a Cloyes Street roller with adjustable keyways. It also has the cutout in the back of the cam sprocket for the included thrust bearing. All in all a good looking piece that has the right tension. HOWEVER... the timing was not correct, spent...

    BBC 489 build

Pooh, timing chain that I replaced the Howard cam, (it was way tight) was a Summit brand, and made by SA gear, just like the Howards cam one....also way to tight. Sent back and waiting on a Cloyes.

    Wiring Harness? Choosing one?

American Auto Wire harness for the 73 K20. I got the kit as it has all new switches, sockets, connectors etc, all things I was going to have to replace. CalSgt is right, stock is good, but at almost 72, time is waistin' away. All new electrical is soo nice. I have several crimpers, but my...

    Gas in Oil!?

I am a Holly fan, and never have trouble with the engine starting even when setting for extended periods of time. Not so on the Q-jet on my other truck, few day and have to crank a bunch, I just keep a can of starting fluid in the engine compartment.

    New from northern Maine

Glad you're Here Alan, a great group, and modulators keep it kind. Road my motorcycle to Portland because I wanted to eat lobster. Found a restaurant on a boat, one memorable meal.

    1968 327 in a 75 stepside

Reread, and did not see if there was a cam change. Also not aware that gen 1 engines use different length pushrods. My book says exhaust should have min .080, Intake .050 minimum clearance. It looks like the intake only is hitting, but not sure. Could you confirm? Is the engine still in the...

    Hello from Virginia

All my squares have classic licenses, also the 64 Novea and a 1954 original dealer plate for the 54. No inspections ever, and no yearly tabs.

    Meet my Suburban

I like how you think Paul, and look guys, pics and good explanations on the first post, he's a keeper. Welcome to Slaves of Squarebodies. We had a three D printer for rapid mold modeling, as costumers could get a sample product in a few days. Yep, we made a few "non" (G jobs) shop parts..

    POR 15 equivalents?

Magnet over epoxy primer. Like Ricko said, prep is 90%. I used zep, pressure washer, grinder, lacquer thinner, acid etch, primer, paint. Also clear coat would keep it nice forever. Cost to do the work, materials, consumables, paint was about 800.00. took about forty hours.

    Whats your opinion these welders?

Have Millers, 175 MIg, 225 Tig, both 20-30 years old, and I use them both quite a bit, especially the MIG. Think support down the road, both hard parts, and questions. I can say both good and bad about HF, but have never had there welders. Love Miller.

New For Me 1985 Silverado 20 6.2 Diesel

Ok,ok, I have maybe found a better solution then hacking up the truck....trucks. Nab down the road has a short bed fleet side think it is mid 70's been setting at least 10 years, the only rig of 15 that survived the big 2020 fire, though Steve, (the owner) also lost his house in that fire. I...

More parts in today, like the dipstick as it positively locks, and uses pipe threads to retain it, so it won't leak at all. I will take the pump apart to check it out and deburr any passages etc. Summit timing chain is built by Howards, exactly like the one that was too tight that I sent...

New For Me 1985 Silverado 20 6.2 Diesel

I've been driving this diesel for a year now, learned how it works, checked mileage once with the TH400 and 4:11 got 25mpg, I do not drive over 65. With the 4X4, 4:10 and 4l80e in the K20, I think this will last me and be really reliable for the duration. Yes I do maintain my rigs, and that...

350 TBI Exhaust Manifold AIR System

I know some don't like headers, but they make HP, look good, and if you use good quality gaskets, don't leak. Adding extensions always make more power too.

New For Me 1985 Silverado 20 6.2 Diesel

As some know, I am hooked on the salt, and want to run another rig down there, and this truck would be a great candidate. Huge engine bay, 14 semi Floater with 4:11, (will change the rear gears,) with a 4l80e trans should get me into the 130 mph club, and a good place to start. While I have...
