what other years rear end fit my 1979 chevy c-10 big ten.

The m21 will limit your options. You might look into an m20 or even better an m23z from autogear.

    Rebuilding rear axle DIY?

No doubt they won't move the pinion out. I'm guessing the yoke has been changed at some point with the wrong one to account for the gap. Either way the yoke butts up against the outer bearing which isn't a press fit onto the pinion. If the inner bearing wore that much (3/16?) The OP would have...

    Will a 8.5 Camaro 10 bolt axle fit in a 1981 squarebody?

The 8.5 diff didn't come out until 71, and chevy was pretty slow to give up on their 8.2. I would make damn sure its actually an 8.5 rear. Lots of things happen to these cars in 50 years. It would be a good donor for parts

    Rebuilding rear axle DIY?

I'd inspect the spider gears for wear before doing a full tear down. That can be all of your play and a much easier fix. Especially if you are out power braking and doing one leg burn outs!

    backfire under wide open throttle

76-77 was the prime era of flat cams chevy engines. Pull the valve covers and see how far they are moving. It'll be obvious.

Skool me on timing w/o timing tab

Look at 12 o'clock for the timing tab. Some years had to down the water pump to set the timing. Don't ask me why this was a good idea..

    5.7 Vortec and TBI

Scoggin-dickey made a tbi intake for the vortec heads back in the day. That would be slick. Also it is very easy to make the TBI adapter plate.

    Which dually - 8.1 vs pre-DEF 6.6?

8.1s in trucks have the AAM rear. There's no mistaken that diff.

    Which dually - 8.1 vs pre-DEF 6.6?

Yeah the 6.0 is what it is. Another thing to consider is the availability of an 8.1 truck. I'm pretty well immersed in the biz, I've only seen a handful of them in the wild and that was yrs ago. Up here in the rust belt those years are all but gone too.

    Which dually - 8.1 vs pre-DEF 6.6?

Clean, stock diesel trucks are out there, you just have to know where to look. Stay away from the diesel forums, those are all beat like rented ******. The key is to buy them before the tuners get their hands on them. I'd also venture to say most LB7/LLY/LBZ trucks at this point has had new...

    Square body on new chassis?

I didn't change them at all. The 05 core support is mostly in place. The rad, intercooler, shroud etc all are mounted as they left the factory, even the stock body mounts. I merged the two supports together. The first post or two describes the process. It was a pain in the ass, i spent hours...

    Square body on new chassis?

The hydroboost is from the 05. I drilled new holes to mount it. The 77 had a normal booster. That was no big deal at all. The steering shaft was a little more involved. I bought a universal joint from the local speed shop and had to weld the 77 upper shaft to the joint. The 77 double D shaft...

5.7 back fires through carb but timing is good.

I would check for a flat cam. Turn it over with the valve covers off and have a look.

    Which dually - 8.1 vs pre-DEF 6.6?

The duramax will have better resale value. Folks are all over the older diesels. The 8.1s are beasts, but will always use way more fuel getting the same job done.

    OEM cylinder head castings - 1977 K10

Not for nothing there are way better stock appearing heads out there. I can appreciate the stock build as well though. I have bone stock numbers matching cars and resto-mods.. stock appearing builds with extra HP are my favorites..
