What have you done to your square lately??

I was kind of hoping he'd get it all sorted and make me a set too.

What have you done to your square lately??

The factory made those. Unfortunately, nobody seems to repop them. The original ones turned the buckle 90° so it lined up with the belt blade when the belt was flat across your lap and chest, and it faced the release button to the outside.

    Bluetooth alternatives

Same here. It doesn't even involve a switch. I just pull it out of the lighter socket if I'm going to park for more than a day. It has a USB charger included and will put your phone calls on your speakers too. The mic isn't spectacular, but it's adequate. Plus, they're dirt cheap. Usually less...

    Brass Valve Stem

That is correct. When I had finally assembled all the components I needed to mount the spare under the bed (Don't get me started on a certain cheapskate who moaned so much about the price of the truck that we ended up ordering it without a spare.* ) I brought a rim and tire I had to the tire...

    Brass Valve Stem

I've said it before, but I'll repeat it again. When we bought the truck I was constantly looking to customize stuff because stock was ordinary when they were everywhere. But the more time went on, the more I came to appreciate what GM had wrought.

    Brass Valve Stem

In case anyone cares, I ended up ordering a ten-pack of valves from Amazon. They appeared to be the same as the Summit ones and it was cheaper to get ten with free shipping than it was to get five and pay for shipping from Summit. Install torque was quoted as 35 - 55 lb/in. I usually aim for...

How well should compression hold the truck?

I've had the parking brake on the Mighty TDI freeze in the winter. Since it's FWD and it would just drag the rear wheels I didn't have your option. A little heat on the drum with a Bernz-O-Matic and you could hear the shoes release.

How well should compression hold the truck?

Even with an automatic in Park you're not supposed to use the transmission to hold the vehicle on a grade. Leaving it in gear on level ground is fine, but trusting the drivetrain to counteract gravity is just bad practice. Fix the parking brake.

The 4 bolt main LIE !!! Or is it???

One thing I can say with certainty is the four-bolt mains were the undoing of the 6.2 and 6.5 Liter diesel blocks. Everyone thinks the cranks were weak, but the cranks failed because the mains in the block would crack from the outer main bolts, right up to the cam bore. When mine failed all...

    Brass Valve Stem

Okay. In my defense, I did the googling a few years ago when I did the spare tire. I didn't get such good results at that time. Thanks for the link.

    Brass Valve Stem

It's time to put a decent set of sneakers on the truck, and I'm refurbishing the original steel wheels. These had brass valve stems with an expanding rubber grommet. There are two different versions of these on the truck. One is rollmarked (*= five-pointed star) * Schraeder CAN * and TR501...

    6.2 coarse nozzles - part #?

I think I still have a set of rebuilds on the shelf. I'll check tomorrow.

Check your cooler. Do you drive through any deep puddles?

Just how much of a moron am I?

Well, going from a 305 to a 350 is certainly better than the other way round.

What should I do with this toolbox?

Being a shade-tree machinist I see that box as similar to one of my Kennedy machinist's box. Maybe dedicate it to your taps, dies, drills, measuring instruments, Machinery's Handbook etc. Or find a similar specialization like body and fender and paint tools and supplies. On a smaller scale, I...

What have you done to your square lately??

Then it's well worth the effort. All the ones I've done that weren't in the vehicle I just stood them on a pair of jackstands. But if I was doing more I'd definitely want them more secured and standing height.

Just out of curiosity, how many rears are you planning on building?

    Proportioning Valves

1000% on what you're saying, except that valve doesn't seal off a failed section. They're inherently isolated. But I've never had a failure where the failed section didn't dump all the fluid.

    6.2 Diesel Block Heater Time

BTW, it's not a carburetor. Pumping the throttle doesn't do you any good. Go part throttle in cooler weather or full throttle in cold and hold until it starts.

    6.2 Diesel Block Heater Time

You can test the glowplugs with a meter or test light too. Pull the wire off and check for continuity. Burned out plugs will show open. I don't know that I would just automatically replace them all, but if it floats you boat...

    6.2 Diesel Block Heater Time

My first suspicion would be bad glowplugs. Does it start quickly after sitting for a long time when the weather is warmer? If not, it may be losing prime. Are you using the throttle when you're cranking? A worn injection pump starts manifesting itself by being hard to start hot. As a rule of...
