    700R4 Information Thread

Governor is the primary difference. The valve bodies themselves are the same between gas and diesel applications...200-4Rs by contrast, use different governors, valve bodies and 1-2 accumulator housings (in case anyone was wondering, lol).

I actually set one up for a 200-4R recently so the 700R4 isn't all that different and I imagine will involve the same or very similar steps.

I imagine that could be possible, if you wanted to either make different size restrictors to achieve a certain pressure 'floor' which can be adjusted by either swapping out different restrictors or making an 'adjustable' restrictor...You'll have experiment and test...I'll look into it also and...

You basically have to block the TV Boost valve so it's wide open and same with the TV limit valve. You also need to modify the reverse boost valve to avoid a severe overpressure condition when in Reverse. I think I have some instructions Chris at CK gave me a few years ago so if I can dig them...

4L65E Mega Monster Transmission - Destruction and Shift Kit check balls

Thanks, I am aware of his channel but don't watch as between working on them daily and creating content for my own YT channel, I don't really have bandwidth to look at other channels like I used to. Have you visited my TH400 info thread here? That has a lot, if not all of the same information...

    4L60E Information Thread (Includes 4L65/70/75)

Hey Everyone, Starting a similar thread to the one available for the 700R4 but dedicated to the 4L60E as countless GM cars, trucks and SUVs were fitted w/them from 1993-2013/14 and often retro-swapped into Squarebodies. Posted below is my teardown and inspection video that covers everything you...

They look/sound familiar, perhaps they're on eBay or sell via Amazon...If they provide kits w/Alto, BW, Raybestos, etc friction elements they should be good to go...Most of my soft parts are either sourced locally via Transsttar's distributor here in town or distributors out of Cali. Transstar...

    TH400 Information Thread

Since you're outside CONUS, best bet is probably eBay or perhaps Amazon. I like the kits sold by Transparts Warehouse (ebay search: "TH400 Deluxe kit); most come with upgraded Alto high energy clutches, new steels, both bands, paper/rubber kit, bushings, filter, etc. For a stock build, you...

You're welcome, Ken...Symptoms can be an indicator of worn applied elements, particularly the forward and direct clutch packs...There are two applied elements working when in reverse: The low reverse band and direct clutch. If the direct clutch is stressed, it won't grab until there's sufficient...

Remove the housing retention bracket then speedo housing/driven gear from the case. Then count the teeth on the driven gear if there's enough of the teeth left to count. You should also be able to view the drive gear and count the drive gear teeth by rotating the driveshaft...

4L65E Mega Monster Transmission - Destruction and Shift Kit check balls

No one does a cut and clean, if its going to a converter builder, it will be completely rebuilt, which is exactly what you should do. Never reuse old converters with a rebuilt transmission. I always provide a new one with my rebuilds...

    TH400 Information Thread

You can use the TCI gear calculator to get a good idea of what you need, drive and driven gear wise when it comes to tooth count. It will get you close but the only fool-proof way is to simply count the teeth on both gears...

4L65E Mega Monster Transmission - Destruction and Shift Kit check balls

The trouble spot is the 1-2 check ball location...much more so than the others however if Torlon check balls were used, it's not likely to be worn as if steel 1/4" balls have been installed. If you have to drop the valve body and plate again for any reason, please post a picture of it cleaned off...

You're welcome, man and appreciate the views and sub! Gotcha, yea for now, keep the 7 check balls...One question - do you have a picture of the spacer plate all cleaned off? I'm curious to see what, if any, mods they did to it...From what I recall from the last one I did, they drill the plate...

4L65E Mega Monster Transmission - Destruction and Shift Kit check balls

Anytime there is failure in the gear train, thurst-driven destruction is almost guaranteed as once individual components start breaking up, teeth start stripping, you being to have significant, uncontrolled (and violent) longitudinal travel of the rotating assembly, either in part or as a whole...

4L65E Mega Monster Transmission - Destruction and Shift Kit check balls

Technically, you dont adjust rear end play in the 700R4s or 4L60Es as everything is free to thrust against the pump. But excessive front end play can also indirectly cause this sort of failure...Excessive play results in the forward drum thrust bearing being hammered by the stator as the parts...

Monster Transmission, LOL!!! All the monster transmissions I have torn down (mostly 4L60Es and a few 4L80Es) all looked basically stock inside, including stock frictions, basic shift kits or mods and nothing overly innovative; same is true for their OTC 'Monster in the Box' kits...You can buy...

    700R4 Hard/Delayed 1-2 shift

You can simply remove the governor from the transmission and do your mods to it with the kit on the bench; no need to remove the trans. The governor can be accessed at the rear of the transmission. Simply remove the governor cover retainer clip, if one is installed then take a smooth, flat blade...

I’m interested in swapping out the TH350 for a 700R4

What is a "4700"? No 700R4 came from the factory without a converter clutch however you can convert to a non-locking converter using transgo's Non-lock up conversion kit.

    700R4 Hard/Delayed 1-2 shift

You likely have a standard governor causing shift points to be later when a diesel governor would be more appropriate for the diesel given their torque curve vs a 350 gas engine's. You can pick up a Superior Tech governor kit to modify it so it shifts a bit earlier so it doesnt wind up the...

    Turbo350 w/shift kit slamming 2nd gear

Fun Fact: Chrysler was nearly bankrupt for large portions of the 80s and early 90s and didn't get around to developing overdrive transmissions until nearly a decade after GM and Ford. When they did, they leveraged their A345 design from the mid-70s, which was a an optional extension assembly...

Yep, avoid 82-E84 700R4s or convert them to L84-87 standard (30-spline shaft, newer design "152" drum and 29 element sprag. Top it all off with a factory 10-vane rotor/slide kit and it's good to go for most applications.
