    ALDL data logging

I saw one of those SnapOn devices many years ago being used on a Ford vehicle - but in a fairly well equipped professional shop. I expect the price tag of the device exceeded the sticker price of the vehicle being tested.... Staying in the realm of "things actual people can afford", I was able...

    ALDL data logging

No question the concept was very advanced for its day, and the system works well internally for doing its job. I just can't get my mind around why they used such a weird serial communication speed when it would have been easier and likely cheaper to use standard (even for the time period)...

    ALDL data logging

I would love to have a conversation with the folks at GM who designed the ALDL system - preferrably with a selection of medieval weapons at hand. It seems like they designed it specifically to be hard to communicate with. 160 baud rate? Even in the 1970's almost every device that used serial...

    ALDL data logging

The ALDL connection on my square Suburban is under the dash right below the steering column, and the ECU itself is suprisingly easy to get to behind the glovebox (I believe most of the trucks and larger cars have that same position?) I was helping a friend yesterday get his 454/TH400 combo...

Chain/Rope Hoist vs Lift (cherry picker)

I've used both - a really stout outdoor overhead beam with an A frame on each end welded up out of scrapped electrical tower angle iron with a massive I-beam (not copyrighted by Apple yet) across - my father and I picked up a lot of stuff with that thing including a whole truck on one occasion...

Intermittent High Idle and Occasional Hesitation on Acceleration

I started a thread about it to discuss my own experiences (which right now involves waiting for a battery so my laptop will finish starting up before dying) - feel free to hijack it all you want with regards to ALDL, the more we know the better off we all are...

Intermittent High Idle and Occasional Hesitation on Acceleration

I don't know the answer - but I have similar symptoms. I can be sitting at an intersection and while waiting, the idle will creep up and then stays up until a restart. I can't find a vacuum leak either. I thought it might be the brake booster causing it while holding the brake at a light, so...

    ALDL data logging

I played with it some last night - the FTDI driver seemed to be the correct one, now TunerPro RT passes the cable connection test. Was really late at night by the time I got to that point, and I didn't feel like stringing up extension cords in the dark. Since my laptop batteries are smoked I...

    87 Chevy TBI IAC Troubleshooting

Sounds like you just need a stiffer spring since you can manually pull it back. I put a secondary return spring on mine because I know its worn and sometimes wouldn't close all the way back down when lifting off the pedal...last thing I want is a 454 stuck partially open when I need to stop.

    ALDL data logging

Wonderful info - I'll definately have the 10K resistor turned on. Thanks for the clarification!!!!

    ALDL data logging

On Moates' site they have links to download the FTDI drivers which is what I grabbed - theres 3 choices so I snagged the one that comes straight from FTDI themselves - I'll probably grab the other 2 to have in reserve as well since I won't be able to do it one I'm home. Still trying to find an...

    ALDL data logging

I'm making a new topic for this so it doesn't completely take over the EGR question topic..... Thanks to folks on here who found it, I ordered (and was asked to follow-up on how it worked) the Moates' EXTREME ALDL reader which communicates with a computer via USB to supposedly get real-time...

EGR tests good, but code 32!

According to the post office my ALDL device was supposedly delivered today (at least thats what their tracking says). If its really there when I get home I'll try to get it talking to a Win10 laptop this week.

    Auxiliary fan replacement

Z82 was the code for my 1989 that crossreferenced to TRAILERING PACKAGE-SPECIAL-REESE TYPE HITCH. I'm not certain but I think ordering the Z82 package automatically enabled other codes. UY7 is the code specifying 7 WIRE, 2 LEAD FRONT HARNESS, 5 LEAD REAR HARNESS but I'm not sure that means I'm...

    Auxiliary fan replacement

Will confirm - my 1989 Burb has the tow package listed in the glovebox RPO codes and has both the aux electric fan and oil cooler. Oil cooler was held in by ONE zip-tie when I bought it, despite all the factory bracketry being present behind the grille. Looked like the rivets holding the...

    Suburban roof replacment

I got my very clean bodied (but not running) 1989 3/4 ton Burb for $2500. It needed help mechanically but I bought it mainly because the body was absolutely rust free despite some dings and hail dents. That was a rare deal though, I keep my eye out and havn't seen one for that low again. Saw...

    Switching AC to R134

The more I read the more I think Sanden is going to be the way to go for me, but making it fit where the factory R4 is now will require some seriously advanced fabrication skills and tools, of which I have neither...

EGR tests good, but code 32!

Placed the order this morning - I think Moates owes Ricko1996 a commission or finders fee of some sort since he was the one who hunted this down for us!!

    Switching AC to R134

My Suburban never got comfortable with the original system running 134, it had been messed with before my purchase and I expect all they did was refill it with 134 and hope. My intent is to use the earnings from next spring's seasonal job to do a major rework (A6 compressor instead of tired R4...

EGR tests good, but code 32!

I will - I won't be able to place the order until tomorrow though (need to get a prepaid card with enough juice to do the purchase). I'll also need to get a working win10 laptop - I have one but the battery is dead. I'll still be able to test it in the driveway tho...

And you are todays winner!!! Will be trying to make that purchase ASAP....

EGR tests good, but code 32!

The RedDevilRiver people are one of my examples of an oganization that no longer seems to exists... I could probably get my hands on a cheap Windows 10 laptop easily enough (probably even one old enough to have a real serial port), but that cable has become absolute unobtanium.

Nobody warned me about the MPGs on these square bodies!

OK you guys have me questioning my own reality. I know my speedo is off by (on average) +5 or so at highway speeds, which I just attributed to bad springs in the instrument (when it says 70 I'm going around 65 and it isn't always perfectly consistant when compared to GPS). Now I have to do a...

EGR tests good, but code 32!

I have Torque on a cheap prepaid phone that I never activated the SIM on (only use it as a music player, off-grid GPS and OBD2 reader) along with a small OBD2 dongle a coworker grabbed for me off Amazon. Its fantastic and has saved me so much troubleshooting on my 2003 and 2011 vehicles and...

EGR tests good, but code 32!

Does that tool give you any real-time data like IAC counts or at-the-moment sensor readings? All my attempts to find any WinALDL or ALDLDroid interfaces have failed (I'm not sure anyone is actually still making them anymore-links goto pages last updated decades ago or broken, emails get no...
