    Too late now, but AL heads will easily tolerate another full point higher compression than their iron counterparts. Likely even as high as 11:1 on pump premium and a decent street cam, depending how good the combustion chamber design is and a few other factors.

    I believe there was a 487X which was like the older 461X vs. 461, larger intake runners. I consider smallblock heads to be either large or small chamber, vs smog or non-smog, but should really group them into lightweight vs heavy castings (new vs old ??).

    Alot of cams out that will work fine for you, the Howards cam seems like it will also. I'll be using the smallest VooDoo cam in a much smaller engine. Same seat duration with more .050 duration and more lift. 207* / 213* @ .050, .437" / .454", 112* LS. You should consider a rocker arm upgrade...

    Additional scavenging is done with a merge collector and/or an X-pipe - plus a correct length of pipe of the correct diameter after it. No need for further scavenging. The best work is done by headers scavenging the cylinders, unless the rest of the exhaust is built too small and/or restrictive...

    OP The Lunati 10120410 cam would be close to as large as I'd want for a truck and 407 ci, it'll work with your 4 speed. BUT , if you have the stock K10's 3.08 gears I wouldn't like them combined with your 35" tires at all ! (But 4th gear would feel like overdrive to me) You already know how...

    Use a support rear cover to protect against carrier bearing cap deflection. I used a stock Nova 10 bolt 8.5 and factory clutch posi ( C-clips 'n all) in our stock car and it saw tons of abuse too. Lightest rear axle I could use that would take it !

    MMO in the oil every winter when the temps fall below 10 or 15 degrees, cuts the viscosity down and improves the flow ( for cold starts ). I'm sure it burns-off over time when used in the crankcase.

    If you've ruled-out the diesel then it'll be hard/impossible achieving power and mileage. Probably the best compromise then is a swirl-port or vortec headed 350 and an OD trans. Or perhaps a carbed 283/305/307 with headers a T350 trans and a light foot !

    Vortec heads- cold weather issues?

    Yes, a stock iron Qjet intake.(early versions did) There are fittings on the adapter specifically for warming. I don't remember exactly how they're setup , and my '90 3+3 is gone - so I don't have a reference here.
