This is the original 1981 in my GMC Sierra Classic 1500.
Anybody have any ideas or know a way to restore them? I have scrubbed them a few times with soap and water they look better but...........
I added the second snorkel using as many stock parts that I could pull at the wreckers. The punch out was there on the drivers side just had to knock it out then install the blocker thingy into the rad support. I believe it was a wheel bearing cap that I used to block the heat tube under that...
After sitting for years I had brake calipers that couldn’t release. Step by step working through the hydraulic system by cracking open the bleeder and then back down the line I determined it to be the hoses. Replaced and worked fine but then also changed calipers. I cut the old brake hoses and...
The knockout was in the rad support on the drivers side so got all the parts from the right side at a wrecker and built a factory looking dual snorkel. It all looks stock.
I also did not get anything like that when I bought my truck. Lol I still have the wheel and tire mounted that came on it. Don’t think I would run it very far today.lol
I used Malibu (70’s) long tube headers on my 81 they fit perfect and clear everything but the trans crossmember gets in the way of the exhaust. I used an aftermarket crossmember to give the clearance needed. They tuck up real nice perfect for lowered trucks.
It will be a future collector truck store it away for 30 years and then take it to Barrett Jackson, OR just drive and enjoy it knowing not every street has a bunch of them. Enjoy.
You might find a lot of philips screws in your GM truck have been rounded out or your screw driver slips while you are removing or tightening them. That is because they are not Philips they are Posidrive. It is easy to spot because of the little dots between the x on the screw (see photo) if you...
Everybody has one of these laying around, tennis ball cut a slice in it and stick it over the safety latch hook you know the one if you have ever done some motor work on your square. Cheap and works well.
Use snapping pliers (flat ones are the best) that push out as you squeeze in the part that is stuck in the socket. Squeeze push in slightly turn counter clockwise and pull.
Quadrajets can be a good street performance carb it’s just hard to get the tuning jets. I spent years collecting my assortment. A lot of guys don’t know they come in 750cfm and 800cfm which can be hard to find. Guys running in the NHRA Stock class have got the tuning down and there Chevys make...
This is from the late 80’s. Car is gone now but of coarse I can’t get rid of the truck. Mustang or Ratstang yes 454cid Chev with a pg trans was build for NHRA Super Street. Now I would have to have a stacker trailer with the car and a golf cart pulled by a huge motor home. Oh the good times.
If this has been a problem since you bought the truck and are not sure if the headlights have been changed I would check the wattage of the headlights. It was common years ago for people to upgrade headlights to ones like Bosch with higher wattage which required the install of a relay but they...
I used 72 Malibu/Monte Carlo Hooker headers, clearance everywhere EXCEPT you have to change or modify the cross member. They tuck up nice in the frame and give good clearance for lowered trucks.
I drag raced a 67 shorty for about 12 years and I made crossmember brackets so the front of the bars could be adjusted up or down. I used the Alston manual of that time period and did adjustments as a ladder bar. Ended up going about 2” down on front and with a 454 th400 and slicks it would...
My 81 with 350 came with a single pelt type cat back to a muffler and then dual outlets that came out the right side behind the fender. When the warranty was up the whole exhaust from manifolds right to the back was removed and headers with duals installed. All nicely stored in the attic of my...
Put a stock am/fm in the dash open the glove box and mount whatever you want (CD Bluetooth etc.) in there. Years ago I had a job that included installation of alpine equipment and cut up many trucks to install the din mount, regret every one now.
With a mild cam, no cross over and -20 degrees it would puff out perfect smoke rings at idle and once I installed a cross pipe the rings ended. It did look a bit odd the rings popping out from a truck.
From what I can see in the Clean photo the lifters all look almost even hight on the right side of the pic. I would turn it over by hand and make sure you have lift and the cam is not worn out. Just an observation it might look different in real life
