    Did the door get replaced? I purchased two new doors from GM and they fit like yours gaps at back, bottom and front are very nice but the top sucks.     I hope the cable pictured is the old one you replaced because that one is definitely no good at the metal collar on the trans end.

    Run what you have either will do the job unless you are going to autocross and need more adjustability.

    Judging by the rivets still holding the choke on there is a good chance that carb has never been rebuilt. Clean it up and put a kit in it and as long as shafts are not worn out it should give many more years of service.

    New Speedometer Question

    1981-1983 use a mechanical/electric resumeable cruise control with speedo cable in and out. 1984 and up use an electronic cruise control which would require a VSS tied in with no speedo cables attached to the cruise control.

    Factory air cleaner/cold air setup?

    I was told on the 81’s the snorkel was on one side for the v8’s and on the other side for the v6’s. GM put the knockout on both side but only used one. I just used the parts from another v8 and weld it on and knocked out the other plug. The plastic part that twists into the rad support works...

    Did I ruin this pinion bearing?

    I’m too late but wanted to tell you to put it in with the burner bearing just to check depth so when you go to put on another bearing you can change the shim if required.

    It’s not fast but is consistent. Normally 15.2-15.4 depending on the day. Short block has never been out of the truck, pan has a slight leak kind of a sweat but it’s never been off so it deserves to sweat a little. Heads were touched up back in the 80’s and now has a Crane cam, Edelbrock...

    Need to replace rubber fuel lines on top of both tanks….

    I lifted the box by putting a 4”x4” post between the joists of the garage and wrapped a chain round it. Hooked a come along to Strapes on four corners and a 2x4 across the back so sides don’t pull in. Did this as a one man dance. Worked good.

    Speedometer issue?

    Have you unhooked the cable from the spring clamp? If not reach up behind and pull down on the spring tab while pulling the cable towards firewall and install gauge then push cable back in and it should click once ingauged into speedo.

    Just about everything I have changed on my 81 which I bought new I keep the original parts. One example is I have the complete exhaust from manifolds to the muffler and dual tail pipes that exited behind the right rear tire. Was barely a year old when I went to headers and true duals.

    Measure the bore in the carb and measure the fuel line nut depth where the filter goes and you can calculate how much room you have for a filter and spring. Side note I have found that some filters that have the rubber check valve that they are made with way way smaller ports than the GM...
